Ivan Nova (Yankees)

5/16/12 3:25 pm

Ivan Nova (foot, ankle) is scheduled to throw a side session Thursday morning in Toronto.

If it doesn’t go well, Nova will likely be scratched from his next scheduled start. He made an early exit from his outing Monday against the Orioles after suffering a contusion and sprain of his right foot and ankle.

Raul Ibanez (Yankees)

5/16/12 2:50 pm

Raul Ibanez (elbow) is back in the Yankees’ lineup Wednesday.

Ibanez was in the right elbow by a pitch Monday, but he was going to sit out Tuesday anyway with left-hander Wei-Yin Chen on the hill for the Orioles. It shouldn’t be a concern moving forward. Ibanez will start in left field Wednesday while Eric Chavez serves as the DH.

Derek Jeter (Yankees)

5/16/12 2:44 pm

Derek Jeter is not in the Yankees’ starting lineup Wednesday against the Blue Jays.

Just a day off for the Yankee captain. Jayson Nix will fill in at shortstop while Curtis Granderson slides into the leadoff spot.

Freddy Garcia (Yankees)

5/16/12 4:03 am

Freddy Garcia yielded one unearned run on one hit through two innings against the Orioles on Tuesday.

Since his demotion to the bullpen on April 29, Garcia has surrendered only three hits along with zero earned runs in six innings. While his 8.69 ERA remains ugly, he is finally headed in the right direction.

David Robertson (Yankees)

5/15/12 9:55 pm

David Robertson (oblique) said he’s been told it’s realistic that he’ll need only the minimum stay on the disabled list.

We’ll see about that. Players are almost always optimistic at the beginning of their disabled list stints, but oblique injuries very rarely result in minimum stays. We’d be surprised if Robertson returns before the end of the month. Rafael Soriano will handle the ninth inning for the Yankees for now.

Curtis Granderson (Yankees)

5/15/12 9:00 pm

Curtis Granderson connected on his 13th homer of the season on Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough to lead the Yankees to victory over the Orioles.

It was his only hit of the night as O’s starter Wei-Yin Chen shut down the New York bats. Granderson is now hitting .257 on the season with 13 homers and 23 RBI, though to nitpick he has only stolen one base on the year.

CC Sabathia (Yankees)

5/15/12 8:57 pm

C.C. Sabathia struggled in a loss to the Orioles on Tuesday, giving up four runs on eight hits in just six innings of work.

Sabathia struck out six and walked four in the game. He struggled with his command throughout the night, and needed 103 pitches to get through the sixth inning. The loss is his first of the season, dropping him to 5-1 on the year, while raising his ERA to 3.77. He remains one of the truly elite pitches in the game, and will look to bounce back when he squares off against the Reds at home on Sunday.

David Aardsma (Yankees)

5/15/12 5:08 pm

David Aardsma (elbow) has begun throwing sliders.

The rehabbing right-hander had been limited to fastball-only bullpen sessions for the past couple of weeks, but he’s beginning to take significant steps forward. Aardsma, who underwent Tommy John surgery last July, could be a candidate to join the Yankees’ bullpen before this year’s All-Star break.

Rafael Soriano (Yankees)

5/15/12 4:17 pm

Yankees manager Joe Girardi confirmed Tuesday that Rafael Soriano will fill in at closer.

“I don’t doubt he can do the job,” said the Yankees skipper. “I’ve seen him do it before.” With Mariano Rivera done for the year because of an ACL tear and David Robertson out three weeks with a strained oblique, Soriano is a must-have in all fantasy leagues. He’s registered a 2.57 ERA through 14 innings this year.

Cody Eppley (Yankees)

5/15/12 3:11 pm

Yankees recalled RHP Cody Eppley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Eppley will function as a middle reliever while David Robertson recovers from his left oblique strain.
