Burt Reynolds (Yankees)

2/22/12 1:31 pm

Yankees signed INF/OF Burt Reynolds to a minor league contract.

No, not that Burt Reynolds. This one is actually Robinson Cano’s 23-year-old cousin. He was previously a farmhand with the Rays and played last season with the Newark Bears of the independent Can-Am League. He’ll serve as organizational fodder.

David Aardsma (Yankees)

2/22/12 12:41 pm

Yankees signed RHP David Aardsma to a one-year, $500,000 contract.

Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News was the first to report the terms of the contract. Aardsma isn’t expected to return until the second half of the season following Tommy John surgery, but he could end up paying big dividends down the line as the deal includes a club option for 2013. This is your classic low-risk/high-reward move.

David Aardsma (Yankees)

2/22/12 12:21 pm

Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports that the Yankees have signed right-handed reliever David Aardsma.

Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports that it’s a major-league deal worth $500,000. Aardsma is currently working his way back from Tommy John surgery last July and likely won’t be ready to contribute until mid-season. The 30-year-old posted a 2.90 ERA and saved 69 games for the Mariners from 2009-10, so he could be a savvy addition.

Joba Chamberlain (Yankees)

2/22/12 11:42 am

Joba Chamberlain (elbow) said his first session off a full mound went “really, really good.”

Chamberlain was throwing from a half-mound until now, so he continues to make encouraging strides as he rehabs from Tommy John surgery. The Yankees are hopeful he’ll be able to return to the bullpen sometime in June.

Eric Chavez (Yankees)

2/21/12 8:15 pm

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Yankees and Eric Chavez have agreed to a contract, pending a physical.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Chavez will receive a one-year deal worth $900,000. The 34-year-old was limited to just 58 games with New York last season due to a fractured foot, batting .263/.320/.356 over 175 plate appearances. It’s unlikely he’ll be able to stay healthy, but he’ll serve as Alex Rodriguez’s primary backup at third base.

George Kontos (Yankees)

2/21/12 2:30 pm

George Kontos felt discomfort in his oblique during a throwing session Tuesday in Yankees camp.

Kontos has been shut down for a couple of weeks. He was doubtful to land a spot in the Yankees’ Opening Day bullpen before the injury and is even more doubtful now.

Raul Ibanez (Yankees)

2/21/12 12:28 pm

Yankees signed OF Raul Ibanez to a one-year, $1.1 million contract.

Ibanez passed his physical on Tuesday in New York and will travel to the Yankees’ spring complex in Tampa, Florida on Thursday to begin workouts. The deal also comes with around $2.9 million worth of performance-based incentives. Ibanez, 39, will function as a part-time designated hitter and backup outfielder in 2012.

Eric Chavez (Yankees)

2/20/12 5:13 pm

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Yankees won’t budge higher from around $1 million on a contract for Eric Chavez.

Sounds pretty reasonable for a player with Chavez’s lengthy injury history. The 34-year-old was limited to just 58 games with New York last season due to a fractured foot, batting .263/.320/.356 across 175 plate appearances. If re-signed, he’ll serve as a backup to Alex Rodriguez at third base.

Mariano Rivera (Yankees)

2/20/12 1:48 pm

Mariano Rivera indicated Monday in Yankees camp that he is likely to retire after the 2012 season.

Rivera told reporters that he has made a decision about his future, but playfully declined to reveal what that decision is. Marc Carig of the Newark Star-Ledger said Mo “sounded like a man at the start of a farewell tour.” The 42-year-old right-hander enters 2012 with a 2.21 career ERA and 603 career saves. He should remain a top fantasy option until the very end.

CC Sabathia (Yankees)

2/20/12 12:27 pm

CC Sabathia will be the Yankees’ Opening Day starter.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi made the obvious revelation on Monday morning in Yankees camp. The order behind Sabathia is less certain, but it will be some combination of Michael Pineda, Hiroki Kuroda, Ivan Nova and Phil Hughes.
