Eduardo Nunez (Yankees)

5/21/12 6:15 pm

Eduardo Nunez has been placed on Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s disabled list with a sore right thumb.

At this point, the injury isn’t considered major, but obviously Nunez won’t be brought back up by the Yanks anytime soon. He was sent down on May 11 to work on his defense at shortstop and second base.

Manny Banuelos (Yankees)

Yankees pitching prospect Manny Banuelos has been placed on the disabled list at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre with a sore left elbow.

No word yet on the severity of the injury. Banuelos was on the DL earlier this season with a back ailment and had pitched well since returning. Expect the Yanks to play things cautiously with their talented young lefty even if no structural damage is found.

David Robertson (Yankees)

5/21/12 4:39 pm

David Robertson (oblique) will not be ready to return from the disabled list when he’s first eligible.

Robertson previously expressed optimism about being ready to return after the minimum 15 days, but Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Monday that he will need more time. Oblique injuries can be very tricky, so this shouldn’t come as a big surprise. Rafael Soriano will continue to hold down the closer role for now.

Mark Teixeira (Yankees)

5/21/12 2:57 pm

Mark Teixeira (inflamed bronchial airways) is back in the Yankees’ starting lineup Monday.

Interestingly, he’s starting out of the seventh spot for the first time since his rookie season in 2003. Teixeira was able to pinch hit in the ninth inning of Sunday’s loss. The 32-year-old first baseman told reporters this weekend that he is resigned to the fact that he’s going to have to play through some discomfort.

Mark Teixeira (inflamed bronchial airways) returned to the field Sunday after missing three starts.

Pinch-hitting for Eric Chavez in the ninth and facing Aroldis Chapman, Teixeira reached first on Wilson Valdez’s throwing error. He was then pulled for a pinch-runner. Both Teixeira and skipper Joe Girardi said the veteran would start on Monday. “Not 100 percent, obviously, but I think it did some good and I’m looking forward to playing tomorrow,” Teixeira said. “I think at this point we know we’re going to have to deal with it for a little while. The days off definitely helped, and we’ll see how it goes tomorrow, but I’m just going to have to play through a little discomfort for a while.” Teixeira has been battling the issue all season. You can safely get him back into your weekly lineup.

CC Sabathia (Yankees)

5/20/12 3:39 pm

CC Sabathia allowed three runs on six hits and five walks in seven innings of Sunday’s loss to the Reds.

Sabathia had a shutout going through six, but came unglued in the seventh, serving up a pair of solo home runs while issuing three free passes. With two outs and the game tied 2-2, Sabathia walked in Brandon Phillips for what would prove to be the game-winning run. Today was the sixth time in his past seven starts that Sabathia completed at least seven innings of work. He’ll bring a 3.78 ERA into his weekend start in Oakland. He should pitch deep into that one.

Brett Gardner (Yankees)

5/20/12 9:29 am

Brett Gardner (elbow) won’t be allowed to pick up a bat until Thursday.

He had hoped to be cleared before then, so evidently his rehab isn’t going as well as the Yankees want it to. Gardner was shut down for 10 days after aggravating the injury earlier this month, and he remains without a timetable to return.

Brett Gardner (elbow) will be evaluated to determine the next step in his rehab.

“It feels close,” Gardner said of picking up a bat. “There’s no way to tell until I swing.” Gardner was shut down for 10 days after aggravating the injury earlier this month, and his timetable to return is up in the air at this point.

Mark Teixeira (Yankees)

5/20/12 8:30 am

Mark Teixeira could miss a third straight start Sunday due to his severely inflamed bronchial airways.

“I said, ?You know, we?ve tried to give you a day off when there’s a scheduled day off and you haven?t gotten better, so we?ll give you a day off and may give you [today] to see if we can knock this bronchial problem out,?” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Teixeira has been batting the issue all season, and the team is unsure how to treat it and doesn’t know when he’ll be 100 percent again. “We?ve tried everything,” Teixeira said. “That’s why rest is the last effort here. I?ve taken more medicine than I?d liked to. I think I?m done with that option. Rest is kind of the final option.”

Ivan Nova (Yankees)

5/19/12 3:37 pm

Ivan Nova struck out a career-high 12 batters on Saturday, but allowed five runs over six innings in a loss to the Reds.

Nova, who left his last start with a contusion and sprain of his right foot and ankle, had eight strikeouts over the first three innings. He ended up allowing seven hits, two walks and a hit batsman. The big blow was a three-run home run by Joey Votto in the top of the fifth. Nova now owns a 5.69 ERA over his first eight starts, despite a solid 52/16 K/BB ratio in 49 innings. He’ll look to bounce back with a favorable matchup against the A’s on the road next Friday.
