Nick Blackburn (Twins)

1/14/13 3:26 pm

Nick Blackburn is expected to be sidelined for the next 4-6 weeks after undergoing surgery on his right forearm last week.

Blackburn had surgery October 25 to remove a bone chip from his right elbow, but he continued having problems after the procedure, necessitating another operation. While it’s possible he could make it back in time for Opening Day, it certainly doesn’t help his chances of winning a roster spot. The odds were probably already not good after he posted a 7.39 ERA and 1.71 WHIP over 19 starts in 2012.

Matt Capps (Twins)

1/13/13 10:37 am

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that the Marlins “are among several teams in talks” with Matt Capps.

The Marlins’ bullpen is woefully thin, and Capps would also provide some insurance for relatively green closer Steve Cishek. The veteran right-hander held a 3.68 ERA and 1.09 WHIP for the Twins in 2012 but was limited to just 30 appearance due to shoulder trouble.

Rich Harden (Twins)

1/9/13 11:22 am

According to 1500 ESPN’s Phil Mackey, the Twins are considering Rich Harden for their bullpen.

The Twins would prefer to use Harden as a starter, but his role remains to be seen after missing the entire 2012 season due to shoulder surgery. “He has done both,” GM Terry Ryan said. “And I would tell you starter if the health issue was not a part of this thing, but he’s not been healthy. So we have to keep that option open.”

Carl Pavano (Twins)

1/7/13 2:03 pm

According to Andy McCullough of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Mets and Carl Pavano have “mutual interest.”

Pavano’s agent clarified to McCullough that negotiations are still “very preliminary,” but it sounds like there could be a marriage here. Pavano posted an ugly 6.00 ERA in 11 starts last season for the Twins while fighting right shoulder issues. So he should came rather cheap.

Justin Morneau (Twins)

12/27/12 11:18 pm

Justin Morneau said Thursday that he’s “miles ahead of where I’ve been the last two years” physically.

“I’m feeling good, feeling strong, building strength instead of just doing rehab like I’ve done the last two winters — not recovering from surgery, but actually building toward the goal of getting strong and being ready for spring training and being ready early for that World Baseball Classic,” Morneau said. The first baseman has added weight this offseason after feeling fatigued at the end of a 2012 campaign that saw him bat a disappointing .267/.333/.440 with 19 home runs. Finally healthy and in his walk year, Morneau is a rebound candidate in 2013.

Rich Harden (Twins)

12/27/12 2:19 pm

Rich Harden’s new minor league contract with the Twins includes an opt-out clause for July 31.

In other words, Harden can become a free agent if he’s not on the Twins’ big league roster by the trade deadline. The 31-year-old right-hander is nearly a full year removed from shoulder surgery and represents a nice low-risk option for the Minnesota starting rotation.

Scott Diamond (Twins)

12/21/12 10:57 am

Scott Diamond recently underwent surgery to remove a bone chip from his left elbow.

The southpaw is expected to be ready to go for the start of spring training. Diamond will go into the 2013 campaign as the Twins’ “ace” after posting a 3.54 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 90/31 K/BB ratio over 173 innings this past season.

Rich Harden (Twins)

12/21/12 10:51 am

Twins signed RHP Rich Harden to a minor league contract.

He’s been given an invitation to spring training. Harden missed the entire 2012 season following surgery to repair a torn capsule in his right shoulder, but he’s reportedly healthy now and trying for a comeback. The 31-year-old hasn’t had any success since 2009 and has, of course, had major problems with staying healthy, but it doesn’t hurt to see what he might have left.

Mike Pelfrey (Twins)

12/20/12 9:59 am

Twins signed RHP Mike Pelfrey to a one-year, $4 million contract.

The deal was agreed to on Sunday then finalized on Thursday after the 28-year-old righty passed his physical. Pelfrey made only three starts in 2012 due to an elbow injury that eventually required Tommy John reconstructive surgery and owns a pedestrian 4.36 career ERA. He is doubtful to hold any fantasy value in 2013.

Clete Thomas (Twins)

12/16/12 10:01 pm

Twins re-signed OF Clete Thomas to a minor league contract.

Thomas surprisingly made the Tigers’ Opening Day roster last season, but struggled mightily with the Twins after being claimed off waivers. The 29-year-old outfielder will serve as veteran insurance in the minors.
