Jason Marquis (Twins)

5/21/12 5:04 pm

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Twins will designate Jason Marquis for assignment.

Marquis was pounded to the tune of eight runs over 1 2/3 innings Sunday against the Brewers and now owns a brutal 8.47 ERA through 34 innings through seven starts this year. The Twins signed him to a one-year, $3 million deal over the winter, but it appears they are ready to throw in the towel. Despite his struggles, it shouldn’t take long for him to find a new home once he can sign at the league minimum.

Jason Marquis (Twins)

5/20/12 5:00 pm

Jason Marquis got pounded into oblivion in Sunday’s 16-4 loss to the Brewers, allowing eight runs in just 1 2/3 innings.

This is really starting to get ugly. Marquis had already allowed at least four runs in four of his first six starts, but hadn’t yet failed to complete four innings of work. His latest disaster leaves him with an 8.47 ERA and 1.94 WHIP through 34 innings. Those numbers are in addition to a pathetic 12/14 K/BB ratio. Despite his $3 million salary, Marquis won’t be long for the rotation if this keeps up much longer.

Joe Mauer (Twins)

5/20/12 4:47 pm

Joe Mauer went 4-for-5 with a double in Sunday’s blowout loss to the Brewers.

Mauer’s big day was a bright spot on an otherwise ugly afternoon for the 14-27 Twins. Mauer’s first four-hit game of the season leaves him with a .293/.395/.401 triple slash. Excellent, but not $184 million excellent. He’s homered just once in 147 at-bats.

Carl Pavano (Twins)

5/20/12 11:51 am

The Twins will decide by Tuesday whether to start Carl Pavano Thursday on normal rest or give an extra day.

Pavano’s shoulder is feeling much better, but the Twins want to be careful. They could call up a spot starter on Thursday, though it’s not clear who that would be. Liam Hendriks is an option.

Ryan Doumit (Twins)

5/20/12 1:56 am

Ryan Doumit returned to action on Saturday May 19.

Brian Dozier (Twins)

5/19/12 7:15 pm

Brian Dozier went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI in Saturday’s 11-inning win against the Brewers.

Dozier’s pair of sacrifice flies will further endear him to the fundamentally-obsessed Ron Gardenhire. A movement has begun amongst Twins fans to ordain the rookie Bull Dozier, mostly out of excitement over having a competent and healthy player at short for the first time since Jason Bartlett. Dozier is batting .286/.300/.446 with seven RBI over 54 at-bats. Although he’s been guarenteed Minny’s shortstop gig, thus ensuring him AL-only value, keep in mind that Dozier was never much of a hitter in the minor leagues.

Matt Capps (Twins)

5/19/12 7:09 pm

Matt Capps notched his ninth save of the season in the Twins victory over the Brewers on Saturday.

Question: Which do you find more surprising? Minnesota’s four-game winning streak or the fact that Capps has lowered his ERA from 5.63 to 3.38 in May? While you ponder that, consider that Capps hasn’t walked a batter and has given up just four hits over eight innings this month. Capps is nobody’s idea of a dominant closer, but he’s yet to blow a save this season and has a spectacular 0.88 WHIP.

Joe Mauer (Twins)

5/19/12 12:05 pm

Joe Mauer is not in Saturday’s lineup against the Brewers.

It’s likely just a routine day off, as Mauer is coming of a three RBI night on Friday, and the Twins don’t have the DH spot available. Drew Butera is starting at catcher with Ryan Doumit (calf) limited to pinch-hitting duties.

Denard Span (Twins)

5/18/12 11:27 pm

Denard Span went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBI in his return to the lineup Friday against the Brewers.

Span hadn’t played since Monday due to right hamstring tightness. Through his first 34 games this year, he’s batting .310 with a .372 on-base percentage, four steals, and a .752 OPS. He ranks first on the Twins with 44 hits.

Scott Diamond (Twins)

5/18/12 11:13 pm

Scott Diamond won his third straight start Friday in an 11-3 win over the Brewers.

He struck out three and walked one in five 1/3 innings. Diamond gave up a run in the first, ending the 14-inning scoreless streak. The 25-year-old left-hander is undefeated in three starts for the Twins, with a 1.40 ERA and 0.98 WHIP.
