Jose Valverde (Tigers)

1/20/13 5:07 pm

Now that Rafael Soriano has signed, agent Scott Boras said he expects Jose Valverde to receive more interest from teams.

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski told MLB Network Radio on Wednesday that he doesn’t anticipate bringing Valverde back, and hard-throwing rookie Bruce Rondon is set to open the season as Detroit’s closer. Despite a disastrous postseason, Valverde was able to save 35 games in 2012, and should be able to land a one-year deal as a setup man with closing experience.

Tigers signed LHP Pat Misch to a minor league contract.

Misch spent all of 2012 at Triple-A with the Phillies, posting a 4.98 ERA over 21 starts. He’ll represent depth in the minors.

Ryan Raburn (Tigers)

1/19/13 4:36 pm

The Indians are closing in on a minor league contract with free agent utility man Ryan Raburn.

The deal, which is expected to be finalized next week, would include an invitation to major league spring training. He’s coming off a miserable 2012 season in which he hit .171/.226/.254, but provides versatility with his ability to play four different positions, and has a strong history of crushing left-handed pitching.

Rick Porcello (Tigers)

1/18/13 10:45 pm

Tigers and RHP Rick Porcello avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.1 million contract.

The 24-year-old right-hander was arbitration eligible for the second time due to his status as a super-two player. He’s struggled in each of the past two seasons, but still owns 48 career wins through his age-23 season. A very popular name on the trade market, Porcello could be better served on a team with better infield defense behind him.

Max Scherzer (Tigers)

1/18/13 5:57 pm

Max Scherzer requested $7.4 million and was offered $6.05 million from the Tigers when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday.

Scherzer, who is arbitration-eligible for the second time, posted a 3.74 ERA and 231/60 K/BB ratio over 187 2/3 innings last season while earning $3.75 million. The difference is small enough that the two sides should be able to avoid a hearing.

Tigers avoided arbitration with LHP Phil Coke by agreeing to a one-year contract.

The financial details are not yet known. Coke, who was arbitration-eligible for the second time, posted a 4.00 ERA and 1.65 WHIP over 66 appearances for the Tigers in 2012. He could wind up with some save chances in 2013 if Detroit goes with a committee at closer.

Brennan Boesch (Tigers)

1/18/13 3:29 pm

Tigers avoided arbitration with OF Brennan Boesch by agreeing to a one-year contract.

The financials of the deal aren’t yet known. Boesch, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time, batted just .240/.286/.372 with 12 homers and a .659 OPS this past season. He’s a trade candidate.

Alex Avila (Tigers)

1/18/13 1:47 pm

Tigers avoided arbitration with C Alex Avila by agreeing to a one-year, $2.95 million contract.

Avila was eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter. The backstop hit a disappointing .243/.352/.384 with nine homers in 2012 while dealing with knee issues. He could bounce back in 2013 if he stays healthy.

Austin Jackson (Tigers)

1/18/13 1:44 pm

Tigers avoided arbitration with OF Austin Jackson by agreeing to a one-year, $3.5 million contract.

He receives a nice bump in salary as a first-time arbitration-eligible player. It’s a well-deserved raise, as Jackson bounce back with a big 2012, batting .300/.377/.479 with 16 home runs while playing Gold Glove-caliber defense in center field.

Doug Fister (Tigers)

1/18/13 1:41 pm

Tigers avoided arbitration with RHP Doug Fister by agreeing to a one-year, $4 million contract.

It’s a big raise for Fister, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time. The tall right-hander posted a 3.45 ERA in his first full season with the Tigers in 2012 after putting up a 2.83 mark the season before. He’ll be a key cog in the Detroit rotation again in 2013.
