Reds

Ryan Hanigan (Reds)

5/15/12 9:19 pm

Ryan Hanigan had a nice night at the plate in Tuesday’s loss to the Braves, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Hanigan and Devin Mesoraco both struggled to get anything going offensively at the start of the season, and now both have turned it on as of late. With the two-hit effort, Hanigan has raised his average to .311 on the season and is staking his claim to the majority of the starts behind the plate in Cincinnati. While many fantasy owners are clamoring for Mesoraco to take over as the everyday catcher, manager Dusty Baker will continue to ride Hanigan as long as he continues to hit.

Johnny Cueto (Reds)

5/15/12 9:16 pm

Johnny Cueto took his first loss of the season on Tuesday, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits in just four innings of work against the Braves.

Cueto walked two and struck out two in the game. Brian McCann got the Braves on the board with a solo homer in the second inning. Atlanta then strung together five more hits, a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly to push four more runs across in the third inning. Cueto now sits at 4-1 on the season, and the rough outing balloons his ERA up to 1.89. He’ll look to put this one behind him and get back on track when he faces the Yankees in New York on Sunday.

Homer Bailey (Reds)

5/14/12 9:35 pm

Homer Bailey turned in a much-needed positive outing Monday, limiting the Braves to one run on six hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings in the 3-1 win.

He struck out three. Bailey was blasted for six runs his last time out and has yet to put together any kind of consistency, so it was nice to see him pitch well against a good team. He’ll take a 4.35 ERA and 1.48 WHIP into a rough matchup in Yankee Stadium this weekend.

Sean Marshall (Reds)

5/14/12 9:31 pm

Sean Marshall converted his first save in May Monday, allowing a hit while striking out two in a scoreless inning against the Braves.

Matt Diaz singled to lead off the inning, but Marshall then got a flyout and a pair of punchouts to close the door. Marshall’s 4.15 ERA and 1.54 WHIP pale in comparison to Aroldis Chapman’s numbers, but he should still have a pretty decent leash in the ninth inning.

Chris Heisey (Reds)

5/14/12 9:19 pm

Chris Heisey went 3-for-3 with an RBI double in Monday’s win over the Braves.

It was his second straight start in left field after he hadn’t started in a week. Heisey is batting just .233 this year and has yet to homer, but we’d still like to see what he can do rather than seeing Ryan Ludwick out there.

Aroldis Chapman (Reds)

5/14/12 8:46 am

Aroldis Chapman hasn’t allowed a run (earned or unearned) through 17 2/3 innings of relief this season.

The hard-throwing left-hander also boasts a dominant 31/4 K/BB ratio. Chapman should have been in the Reds’ Opening Day starting rotation after his fine showing in the Cactus League this spring and it remains a mystery as to why he’s still being wasted in a setup role.

Bronson Arroyo (Reds)

5/13/12 8:16 pm

Bronson Arroyo yielded four runs over five innings as part of a no-decision against the Nationals Sunday.

Arroyo gave up a season-high 11 hits, but had his strikeout pitch going once again as he punched out six. The problem is that Arroyo isn’t a strikeout pitcher anymore. Over the last three seasons, he has 356 strikeouts in 635 innings. Mixed leaguers can do better with the Yankees on deck.

Joey Votto (Reds)

5/13/12 7:54 pm

Joey Votto went 4-for-5 with three homers and six RBI in Sunday’s win over the Nationals.

Ryan Ludwick (Reds)

5/12/12 9:35 pm

Ryan Ludwick’s early-season struggles continued on Saturday, as he went 1-for-4 with three strikeouts in the Reds’ loss to the Nationals.

Ludwick is hitting just .187 with an OPS under .630 on the season and has now struck out 24 times in just 75 at-bats. But Chris Heisey is also having a tough time, so it’s not like Cincy can make a big change.

Mat Latos (Reds)

5/12/12 9:31 pm

Mat Latos pitched well against the Nationals on Saturday, giving up just one run on three hits in five innings.

Latos struggled with his command the majority of the game, walking five and needing 109 pitches to make it through the fifth inning. But he operated well in damage control and lowered his ERA from 4.93 to 4.54. He?ll look to get back in the win column when he battles the Mets in New York on Thursday. The Reds lost Saturday’s game against the Nationals 2-1.
