Wade Davis (Rays)

2/21/12 10:56 am

Wade Davis clarified Tuesday that he is not upset with the chatter about him moving to the bullpen.

Davis told reporters Monday that he “doesn’t see any reason” for him to be transitioned to a relief role, but backed away from those comments when addressing the topic again on Tuesday morning. “I understand the situation,” Davis said. “I want to be a starter, but I want to do what’s best for the team, to help us win and get to the postseason.” He will be battling Jeff Niemann this spring for the final spot in the Rays’ starting rotation.

Brandon Gomes (Rays)

Brandon Gomes will throw his first bullpen session Tuesday since undergoing November back surgery.

If all goes well and Gomes is able to avoid setbacks over the next month-plus, he should be fully healthy by the opening of the 2012 regular season. The 27-year-old righty posted a 2.92 ERA and 32/16 K/BB ratio across 37 innings last year as a rookie and will be competing for a middle relief job in Rays camp this spring.

Matt Moore (Rays)

Rays executive vice president Andrew Friedman said Matt Moore won’t have an innings limit in 2012.

Friedman noted that Moore has been “built up in a pretty systematic way” throughout his minor league career, with innings totals of well over 100 in each of the past three seasons. The sensational 22-year-old left-hander is poised for a massive rookie campaign and should be among the second or third tier of fantasy starters on mixed league draft boards. He had a brilliant 12.7 K/9 and 2.64 ERA in close to 500 career innings on the farm.

Kyle Farnsworth said Monday in Rays camp that he’s fully recovered from last year’s elbow problems.

“I didn’t do anything, just let it heal in time,” the right-hander said. Farnsworth registered a cool 2.18 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 51/12 K/BB ratio over 57 2/3 innings in 2011 and should remain a steady fantasy closer in 2012.

Wade Davis (Rays)

Wade Davis said Monday that he doesn’t want to pitch out of the bullpen.

“I’m a starter,” said Davis, who will compete with Jeff Niemann for the final rotation spot during spring training. “I don’t see any reason for me to be in the bullpen. I understand they’ve got to do certain things, but we’ll see. ? I definitely want to be a starter and stay a starter forever. And that’ll be my mentality.” Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times notes that Davis “wouldn’t have much leverage” to force a trade, so he may have no other choice but to accept a relief role.

Johnny Damon (Rays)

2/19/12 10:45 am

Free agent Johnny Damon said he’s no longer considering signing with the Yankees after being told by general manager Brian Cashman that he’s not their first choice to fill the designated hitter role.

“We both are looking at other options now,?? Damon stated. Said Cashman, “He called and I told him the truth. He’s not the No. 1 option if and when I turn to DH options.?? It’s been obvious for a while now that Raul Ibanez is at the top of the Yanks’ list, and he seems like a virtual certainty to sign on once the A.J. Burnett deal becomes official. It’s not clear who Damon is now considering catching on with.

Manny Ramirez (Rays)

The Athletics recently traveled to Florida to hold a workout session with Manny Ramirez.

Jane Lee of MLB.com expects Oakland to sign Ramirez as soon as next week, and confirms that the Athletics’ recent signing of Yoenis Cespedes will not factor into their decision. According to the Associated Press, if the two sides reach an agreement, Ramirez would earn slightly more than the league minimum of $480,000.

Manny Ramirez (Rays)

2/17/12 5:12 pm

Janie McCauley of the Associated Press reports that the Athletics are still pursuing Manny Ramirez.

Not surprising, as Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported earlier this week that the A’s were “likely” to sign him. McCauley hears a deal could happen as soon as the next few days or sometime next week. Ramirez, who will almost certainly get a minor league deal, would likely have to pass a physical before joining Oakland’s spring training camp for full-squad workouts on February 25. The 39-year-old would be permitted to participate in spring training games, but will have to sit out the first 50 games of the season due to a second positive PED test.

Rays signed C Chris Gimenez to a minor league contract.

He’ll also get a spring training invite. Gimenez elected free agency earlier this week after being designated for assignment by the Mariners. The 29-year-old backstop batted just .203/.314/.271 in 70 plate appearances in the majors last year and will likely serve as minor league depth.

Johnny Damon (Rays)

2/16/12 2:34 pm

Jonny Damon told CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman that he’s unsure why the Yankees haven’t made him an offer.

“I think it’s a perfect fit,” Damon said of filling the Yanks’ left-handed DH role. “But for some reason you have the year I had, especially with a team that has trouble scoring, and you can’t even get a call to continue playing.” The 38-year-old batted .261/.326/.418 with 16 home runs and 73 RBI last year for Tampa Bay but could remain unsigned when spring training gets underway next week. The Yankees are thought to be deciding between Damon, Raul Ibanez and Hideki Matsui.
