The Rangers have discussed a long-term contract extension with outfielder David Murphy.

“When we went into the offseason, we identified a handful of players that we wanted to pursue multi-year deals with, and [Murphy] was one of them,” Rangers assistant GM Thad Levine said Monday. “We have had conversations with [Murphy's agent] Mike Moye on that.” The discussions could get more serious this srping. Murphy, 31, is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2013 season. He hit .304/.380/.479 in 2012.

Rangers avoided arbitration with OF David Murphy by agreeing to a one-year, $5.775 million contract.

It’s the midpoint of the figures exchanged last week. Murphy, 31, was in his final year of arbitration and should be in line for a pretty nice deal next winter if he can repeat his performance from 2012, when he batted .304/.380/.479 with 15 home runs and 10 stolen bases.

Martin Perez (Rangers)

1/18/13 9:54 pm

Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux has indicated that Martin Perez, Robbie Ross and Justin Grimm will all be given the opportunity to compete for the fifth spot in the Rangers rotation.

That is assuming of course, that the Rangers don’t ink free agent Kyle Lohse before the start of spring training. The 21-year-old Perez is the most dynamic talent in the bunch and the one that savvy owners should be keeping an eye on in that race.

David Murphy requested $6.5 million and was offered $5.05 million from the Rangers when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday.

It was the third time that Murphy was arbitration eligible. The 31-year-old outfielder looks primed to step into a starting role in the Rangers outfield in 2013, and fantasy leaguers should take note of his double digit potential in power and speed.

Alexi Ogando (Rangers)

1/17/13 5:29 pm

Alexi Ogando is on the provisional roster for the Dominican Republic for the World Baseball Classic, but he has informed the Rangers that he will not play.

Ogando is making the move back to the rotation in 2013 after spending last season in the bullpen, so his focus is on getting ready for the regular season. Rosters for the World Baseball Classic don’t have to be finalized until February 20, so there’s still time for a replacement to be named for the Dominican Republic team.

Matt Harrison (Rangers)

1/16/13 9:14 pm

Rangers signed LHP Matt Harrison to a five-year, $55 million contract extension.

The deal also includes an option for the 2018 season. Harrison, 27, was already under team control through 2014, so the new deal will buy out his first three and possibly four years of free agency. The left-hander is coming off back-to-back strong seasons, having posted a 3.34 ERA and 1.27 WHIP while winning 32 games since the start of 2011.
