Koji Uehara (Rangers)

2/21/12 4:35 pm

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Tuesday that he is not close to trading Koji Uehara.

The Rangers were reportedly closing in on a deal with the Athletics late last week, but nothing appears imminent. The 36-year-old right-hander has already turned down a trade to the Blue Jays. Uehara posted a 2.35 ERA and 85/9 K/BB ratio over 65 innings last season and is owed $4 million in 2012.

Rangers acquired LHP Kelvin De La Cruz from the Indians for cash considerations.

De La Cruz was designated for assignment by the Tribe in mid-February to clear a 40-man roster spot for first baseman Casey Kotchman. The 23-year-old left-hander posted a decent 4.19 ERA and 95/57 K/BB ratio across 86 innings last year at Double-A Akron.

Yu Darvish threw a successful 30-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday morning in Rangers camp.

It was his first mound work in official Rangers gear, and the workout reportedly went flawlessly. The Japanese right-hander will be a person of great interest all spring.

Neal Cotts (Rangers)

2/20/12 8:58 am

Rangers signed LHP Neal Cotts to a minor league contract.

Cotts hasn’t pitched in a major league game since 2009, when he was a member of the Cubs. He’ll function as organizational relief depth in 2012 for the Rangers.

Ian Kinsler (Rangers)

2/19/12 6:33 pm

Ian Kinsler said he is fully recovered from an ankle injury that he has suffered from the past two years.

Kinsler also said he doesn’t have anything new to report on a possible long-term extension with the Rangers. He will be a free agent after the 2013 season. Kinsler had a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection in his right ankle a week after the World Series. “End of pain,” Kinsler said. “It helped everything. Working in the cage, I can take as many swings as I want. I have been able to do a lot more full-body exercises … a lot of jumping and agility. That’s when it hurt the most, but now I haven’t been feeling it at all.”

Brandon Webb (Rangers)

2/19/12 8:42 am

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have “no plans” to watch Brandon Webb at his workout, whenever that may be.

Webb has been throwing on flat ground and is reportedly “free and easy and pain free.” He’s expected to throw off a mound for scouts of interested teams before long, but it sounds like the Red Sox won’t be among those in attendance. The former Cy Young winner has made one appearance in the majors over the last three years due to shoulder woes, but he hasn’t given up on a comeback.

Mike Adams (Rangers)

2/18/12 2:40 pm

Mike Adams (groin) has been cleared for all baseball activities after undergoing surgery in January.

Adams will workout with the team next week and expects to be ”about a week or two behind” when spring training begins. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Rangers have scheduled for him to throw his first bullpen session Tuesday or Wednesday.

Koji Uehara (Rangers)

2/17/12 5:21 pm

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Athletics are unlikely to agree to a deal for Rangers’ reliever Koji Uehara on Friday.

Slusser hears that the Rangers are talking to another team, but that progress could be made this weekend. It’s not clear who the Athletics are offering to Texas, but Slusser suspects one of their excess outfielders could be involved in the deal. If acquired, Uehara would likely become the favorite for saves in Oakland.

Koji Uehara (Rangers)

2/17/12 3:49 pm

T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports that while the Rangers are talking to the Athletics about Koji Uehara, there are “other clubs involved, too.”

We’re guessing this report is coming from someone with the Rangers that wants to get a better return from the A’s, as multiple outlets have reported that a deal with Texas and Oakland is close. Sullivan says the Rangers are looking for multiple prospects in return. Uehara, who might be the favorite for saves in Oakland if the deal goes down, is coming off a fantastic 2011 campaign where he posted a 2.35 ERA and 85/9 K/BB ratio over 65 innings. He’s slated to earn $4 million this season.
