Kris Harvey (Pirates)

Pirates signed RHP Kris Harvey to a minor league contract.

Harvey, a 2005 second-round pick, had a 4.50 ERA and 54/27 K/BB ratio over 64 innings with the Marlins’ High-A and Double-A affiliates last year. The 28-year-old converted outfielder will function as organizational depth.

A.J. Burnett (Pirates)

2/21/12 8:45 pm

A.J. Burnett said Tuesday that he thinks changes in his delivery resulted in a velocity drop last season.

Burnett averaged 94.2 mph on his fastball in 2009, but the average velocity on his heater dropped all the way down to 92.7 mph last season. It’s very possible that this is just the natural progression of a pitcher in their mid-30s, but Burnett seems to believe otherwise. “I had deception in my delivery in 2009 that made me successful,” said Burnett. “It wasn?t anybody. They didn?t like the turn. They wanted me to be more of a strike thrower and try to get more consistent in the strike zone because I was wild in that delivery — but then again I was more powerful and dominant in that delivery.” Even if Burnett doesn’t get back to his previous velocity, he should benefit by leaving the AL East and moving to the easier league.

Gustavo Nunez (Pirates)

2/20/12 8:49 am

Pirates placed SS Gustavo Nunez on the 60-day disabled list with a right ankle injury.

The move clears a spot on the Pirates’ 40-man roster for new starter A.J. Burnett. Nunez, a Rule 5 Draft selection back in December, will miss the start of the season.

A.J. Burnett (Pirates)

2/19/12 9:09 pm

Pirates acquired RHP A.J. Burnett and cash considerations from the Yankees for RHP Diego Moreno and OF Exicardo Cayones.

The Yankees are expected to cover around $18 million of the approximately $31 million left on Burnett’s contract. The Pirates will pay him $5 million this season and $8 million in 2013. The 35-year-old right-hander had a fine first season in New York and even won Game 2 of the 2009 World Series against the Phillies, but it was clear something needed to change after he posted a 5.20 ERA over the past two seasons. Getting away from the American League East should do wonders for Burnett, who struck out 173 batters over 190 1/3 innings last season and has logged at least 32 starts in each of the last four seasons. The Pirates probably won’t contend this season, but don’t be surprised if Burnett ends up being relevant in mixed leagues again.

Alex Presley (Pirates)

2/19/12 12:15 pm

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Alex Presley will be given every chance to start in left field this season.

The Pirates brought back Nate McLouth, but Presley will be the regular left fielder unless he has a terrible spring training. The 26-year-old batted .298/.339/.465 with four homers, 20 RBI and nine steals over 215 at-bats for the Bucs in 2011. He’s better suited as a fourth outfielder, but, with regular playing time, he has enough ability to help NL-only leaguers.

Charlie Morton (Pirates)

2/19/12 12:12 pm

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Charlie Morton’s (hip surgery) rehab is going as well as could be expected, but he’s a bit behind as spring training begins.

Morton is hoping to be ready for Opening Day, but we’re guessing the Pirates play it safe and place him on the disabled list at the start of the season. The 28-year-old right-hander registered a 3.83 ERA in 171 2/3 innings last season. He signed a one-year, $2.445 million deal last month in his first year of arbitration.

Pedro Alvarez (Pirates)

2/19/12 9:51 am

Pirates assistant general manager Kyle Stark said the team is “really encouraged” by what Pedro Alvarez did over the offseason.

“Both in terms of how he looks, how he feels, the confidence,” Stark said. “He’s a part of this and can contribute significantly to what we’re doing. I think the reports are that he’s in a good place mentally and physically.” Alvarez focused his offseason workouts on flexibility and agility rather than strength and practice in the batting cage. He posted a woeful .191 batting average and .561 OPS in 262 plate appearances last season but still has plenty of upside and is certainly worth keeping a close eye on during spring training.

Casey McGehee (Pirates)

2/16/12 10:16 am

Pirates and 3B Casey McGehee avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract.

No word yet on the financial terms of the agreement. McGehee requested a $2.725 million salary and was offered $2.35 million from the Pirates when arbitration figures were exchanged last month. It took over three weeks for the two sides to make a compromise.

Garrett Jones (Pirates)

2/16/12 10:14 am

The Pirates won Wednesday’s arbitration hearing against first baseman-outfielder Garrett Jones.

Jones will make $2.25 million in 2012 as a first-year arbitration-eligible player. He requested a salary of $2.5 million when arbitration figures were filed last month.

Garrett Jones (Pirates)

2/15/12 5:34 pm

The Pirates engaged in an arbitration hearing on Wednesday afternoon with Garrett Jones.

Jones requested $2.5 million and was offered $2.25 million from the Pirates when arbitration numbers were exchanged last month. Despite the small difference between the figures, the two sides were unable to reach a compromise and will now wait for a decision from an independent arbitrator. Jones, 39, batted .243/.321/.433 with 16 home runs and 58 RBI last season and is expected to start at first base for the Bucs in 2012.
