Roy Halladay (Phillies)

1/22/13 8:38 pm

Roy Halladay threw 30 pitches off a mound Tuesday as he ramped up his offseason throwing program.

The session, which was overseen by pitching coach Rich Dubee, went well. Halladay, of course, missed ample time last season due to shoulder issues, but the ailment hasn’t held him back at all over the winter. He hold big bounce-back potential in 2013 if he can avoid the disabled list.

Delmon Young (Phillies)

1/22/13 4:25 pm

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Tuesday that Delmon Young will play right field.

Young is a really poor defensive outfielder, so it’s odd that the Phillies aren’t sticking him in left. This is also another shot to the development of Domonic Brown, who will struggle to find regular at-bats.

Phillies signed OF Delmon Young to a one-year, $750,000 contract.

Antonio Bastardo (Phillies)

1/18/13 12:18 pm

Phillies avoided arbitration with LHP Antonio Bastardo by agreeing to a one-year, $1.4 million contract.

It’s the first year of arbitration eligibility for Bastardo, who could earn more through award bonuses. The left-hander has posted a nice 3.44 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 12.4 K/9 rate over the lat two years for the Phillies. He’ll help set up for Jonathan Papelbon again in 2013.

Chase Utley (Phillies)

1/16/13 12:53 pm

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said Wednesday that Chase Utley is doing baseball activities five days a week.

Amaro has received a positive report from Phillies head athletic trainer Scott Sheridan, who is watching Utley’s workouts in California this week. “Chase is doing very, very well,” said Amaro. “Scott has been with him the last couple of days and he says Chase looks great and is feeling great. We hope it continues.” Utley had a late start in 2011 and 2012 due to cartilage-related knee issues, but the Phillies are hopeful that he’ll be ready for spring training and Opening Day this year.

Aaron Cook (Phillies)

1/16/13 11:47 am

Phillies signed RHP Aaron Cook to a minor league contract with a spring training invite.

FOX Sports’ Jon Paul Morosi was first to report the signing. Cook is coming off a strange season with the Red Sox in which he compiled a 5.65 ERA and averaged just 1.91 K/9. The soon-to-be 34-year-old will provide insurance for the starting rotation and will make $1.625 million if he’s on the major league roster.

Juan Cruz (Phillies)

1/15/13 11:27 pm

Phillies signed RHP Juan Cruz to a minor league contract.

He’ll receive an invitation to spring training. Cruz posted a 2.78 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 33/19 K/BB ratio over 35 2/3 innings for the Pirates last season before they decided to cut him loose in August. The veteran reliever should have a decent shot at grabbing one of the final spots in the Phils’ pen.

Rodrigo Lopez (Phillies)

1/12/13 1:20 pm

Phillies signed RHP Rodrigo Lopez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Lopez appeared in four games with the Cubs in 2012 and posted a 5.28 ERA and 55/26 K/BB ratio in 73 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level. He won’t be a strong option for the major league roster with the Phillies, but should serve as an insurance policy for John Lannan in the minors.

Cole Hamels (Phillies)

1/10/13 11:27 am

Cole Hamels experienced soreness around his left shoulder after a throwing session earlier this winter.

“We shut him down for a couple of weeks, but he’s fine now,” Phillies GM Ruben Amaro said Thursday. “He was being proactive more than anything else, which is good. We backed him off and slowed him down, but he’s back throwing now and doing fine. He’s had no complaints.” It doesn’t sound like a reason for concern at this point.

Michael Young (Phillies)

12/29/12 4:13 pm

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reported Saturday that Michael Young will not be participating in the World Baseball Classic, opting instead to spend the entire spring in camp with the Phillies.

Young was unlikely to be selected for a spot on Team USA, but there had been rumblings that he would suit up for Mexico since his mother is of Mexican descent. Instead, the veteran infielder will use the spring to get himself acclimated to his new team.
