Cole Hamels (Phillies)

5/21/12 5:26 pm

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. said Monday that he remains in contact with Cole Hamels’ agent.

“It’s been pretty open,” said Amaro. “We’ve kept it open. We haven’t made any timelines. I haven’t gotten any from them.” While the communication lines are open, there’s no indication that the two sides have made progress. Hamels, who is due to hit free agency this winter, reportedly wants a seven-year deal and should have no problem finding it on the open market. The 28-year-old southpaw has a 2.48 ERA over his first eight starts this season.

Vance Worley (Phillies)

Vance Worley (elbow) will see Dr. James Andrews on Monday.

The visit is for precautionary reasons, as Worley is dealing with a bone chip in his right elbow and will likely require offseason surgery. The 24-year-old is expected to resume throwing this week.

Jimmy Rollins (Phillies)

Jimmy Rollins is not in Monday’s lineup.

Rollins’ wife gave birth on Sunday night, so he’s presumably unavailable. Freddy Galvis will start in his place at shortstop while Mike Fontenot plays second base.

Placido Polanco (knee) is back in the Phillies’ starting lineup Monday against the Nationals.

Domonic Brown (hamstring) was back in the starting lineup at Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday.

Brown suffered a left hamstring strain earlier this month and hadn’t appeared in a game since May 7. The 24-year-old is batting .240/.279/.344 with zero home runs in 104 plate appearances this year at the Triple-A level.

Placido Polanco (Phillies)

5/21/12 8:00 am

Placido Polanco (knee) was out of the Phillies’ lineup Sunday for a fourth straight game.

Polanco fouled a ball off his left knee Wednesday. He was able to pinch hit Saturday but was still battling discomfort by the start of Sunday’s game. “When I run, I feel it,” said the third baseman. “It’s sore. But it’s getting better. It’s getting better, and it’s a day-to-day to thing.”

Cliff Lee (Phillies)

5/20/12 4:17 pm

Cliff Lee didn’t have it in Sunday’s Interleague loss to the Red Sox, allowing five runs on nine hits in seven innings.

Lee struck out six, walked one and served up a pair of home runs, one a three-run bomb off the bat of Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The non-quality start was just his second in six outings this season. Still searching for his first win, Lee will bring an excellent 2.66 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 40/5 K/BB ratio (through 44 innings) into his Friday start in St. Louis.

Ryan Howard (Phillies)

5/20/12 3:36 pm

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro on Sunday defended the club’s use of a cortisone shot to treat Ryan Howard’s foot last September.

Howard tore his ACL less than three weeks after receiving the shot. “I wanted to clear up some of the insinuations regarding a cortisone shot,” Amaro said. “The cortisone shot was treated for some (other) issue he had. It was not part of the Achilles injury. We didn’t feel it was an issue. That was resolved by the time he had his injury. One thing had nothing to do with the other.” A doctor quoted by the Philadelphia Inquirer disagreed. “When it comes to the risk of an Achilles tendon tear, I’m concerned about cortisone,” he said. Howard is tentatively expected to return to the Phillies sometime next month.

Vance Worley (Phillies)

5/20/12 1:10 pm

Vance Worley has been diagnosed with a bone chip in his right elbow that will likely require offseason surgery.

For now, Worley will gut it out and pitch through the pain. “Man up,” he said. “That’s the only thing I can do. I’ll just grit and grind out there.” While that likely means that Worley should be ready for activation when eligible or shortly after, it’s hard to believe his results won’t be affected by the ailment. He’ll test out the elbow by resuming throwing later this week.

Michael Stutes (Phillies)

5/20/12 9:02 am

Michael Stutes (shoulder) will visit a Phillies team doctor Monday and could be cleared to resume throwing at that time.

Stutes has been sidelined since April 22 with right shoulder soreness. If he does receive clearance, he’ll need a few bullpen sessions before going out on a rehab assignment.
