Chase Headley (Padres)

1/31/13 10:28 pm

Chase Headley said he’s not “on the same page” with the Padres regarding a contract extension and there are currently no plans to re-engage in talks.

Headley wants to remain in San Diego “all things being equal,” but extension talks didn’t go well when they were first broached earlier this winter, and it doesn’t sound like the two sides will be talking again anytime soon. “We talked about a long-term contract briefly at the start of these negotiations,” said Headley. “It was a quick discussion. We weren?t on the same page right from the start. This close to free agency, it has to be a good deal for us. You can?t sacrifice what’s fair.” Headley, who is slated for free agency after the 2014 season, avoided arbitration with the Padres by agreeing to a $8.575 million deal on Wednesday.

Logan Forsythe (Padres)

1/31/13 1:23 pm

Per the Padres’ request, Logan Forsythe has been taking fly balls in the outfield this week at Petco Park.

Forsythe has never played the outfield in a professional game, but he did see time in right and center in college. “I think it’s very beneficial, especially if I can get comfortable out there,” the super-utilityman said Thursday. “Anything that I can do to help the resume.”

Padres and 3B Chase Headley avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $8.575 million deal.

Headley, 28, requested $10.3 million with the Padres countering at $7.075 million when figures were exchanged. It’s a well-earned raise for Headley, who finished fifth in MVP voting in the NL after hitting .286 with 31 home runs and 115 RBIs in 2012. Headley also earned his first Gold Glove.

Kip Wells (Padres)

1/30/13 2:35 pm

Evan Drellich of MLB.com reports that free agent right-hander Kip Wells threw a bullpen session for the Mariners on Wednesday.

Wells, who will turn 36 in April, had a 4.58 ERA and 19/20 K/BB ratio over 37 1/3 innings with the Padres last season. The Mets expressed interest in him earlier this winter, but he’ll almost certainly have to settle for a minor league pact.

Arturo Lopez (Padres)

1/29/13 4:06 pm

Padres signed LHP Arturo Lopez to a minor league contract.

Lopez posted an ugly 6.44 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and 81/32 K/BB ratio in 86 2/3 innings last season in the Mexican League. He’s doubtful to climb all the way to San Diego.

Tim Stauffer (Padres)

1/29/13 3:43 pm

Padres signed RHP Tim Stauffer to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Stauffer, who had surgery in August to repair a flexor tendon in his right elbow, is currently about two weeks behind his usual throwing program. The 30-year-old right-hander may not be ready for the start of the season, but he’s a fine gamble on a minor league deal.

Freddy Garcia (Padres)

1/29/13 11:00 am

CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports that Freddy Garcia would have a base salary of $1.3 million if he makes the Padres.

Garcia signed a minor league deal with the Padres on Monday and will compete for a rotation spot during spring training. The veteran right-hander could make an additional $1.25 million in incentives, which means he could make out at $2.55 million.

Freddy Garcia (Padres)

1/28/13 6:11 pm

Padres signed RHP Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract.

It’s a pretty nice landing spot for Garcia, as he gets to pitch in a cavernous home park and should have a pretty good shot at winning a rotation spot. The veteran right-hander posted a 5.20 ERA in 30 appearances — 17 starts — with the Yankees in 2012, but he put up a 3.62 ERA over 146 2/3 frames for them in 2011.

Luke Gregerson (Padres)

1/28/13 3:49 pm

Padres and RHP Luke Gregerson avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.2 million contract.

Gregerson requested a salary of $3.75 million and was offered $2.875 million from the Padres when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier this month. It only took 10 days for the two sides to find a middle ground.

Clayton Richard (Padres)

1/18/13 7:49 pm

Clayton Richard requested $5.55 million and was offered $4.905 million from the Padres when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday.

Perhaps the Padres most consistent starter from the 2012 campaign, Richard seems likely to earn around $5.2 million. He pitched a career high 218 2/3 innings in 2012, and despite leading the league in home runs allowed (31), managed to keep his ratios respectable with a 3.99 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. He makes for a decent late-round flier, especially when skimming his home starts.
