Dustin Moseley (Padres)

2/21/12 11:41 pm

Dustin Moseley took swings off a tee Tuesday for the first time since undergoing surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder last August.

Moseley admitted that he was tense during Tuesday’s hitting session, which is understandable since he had the surgery after dislocating his shoulder on a swing last year. With that in mind, the Padres plan to bring him along slowly before he hits in a game. The good news is that throwing obviously isn’t an issue. Moseley, 31, posted a 3.30 ERA and 64/36 K/BB ratio over 120 innings last season and projects to open 2012 in the Padres’ starting rotation.

Joe Thatcher (Padres)

2/20/12 4:44 pm

The Padres plan to limit Joe Thatcher’s workload during the early days of camp.

Thatcher has begun the season on the disabled list in each of the past two years due to shoulder injuries (and even required surgery last May), so the hope is that the lighter workload will lead to less complications. “I?ve always gone to spring training thinking I had to impress everyone right away,” said Thatcher. “And it’s kind of against my nature to approach it any other way. But it’s nice to have them know what they think I can do and be able to ease into it.” If healthy, Thatcher should open the year as the Padres’ primary left-handed specialist.

Jeff Suppan (Padres)

2/8/12 3:01 pm

Padres signed RHP Jeff Suppan to a minor league contract.

He’ll also get a spring training invite. Suppan didn’t throw a pitch in the majors last season, but had a 4.78 ERA and 94/51 K/BB ratio over 165 2/3 innings with the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate. The 37-year-old owns a 4.69 ERA over 16 seasons in the majors. He’ll serve as insurance for the starting rotation.

Micah Owings (Padres)

2/3/12 9:55 am

The Padres will give the newly signed Micah Owings a chance to compete for the final spot in the rotation.

He’s unlikely to get it, as Dustin Moseley is the clear favorite as long as he’s healthy. Anthony Bass will be the third contender. Owings’ ability with the bat makes him an ideal long reliever, though, as he can work multiple relief innings while saving the Padres from having to use a pinch-hitter. The 29-year-old right-hander posted a 3.57 ERA and 44/23 K/BB ratio over 63 innings last season for the D’Backs.

Padres signed RHP Micah Owings to a minor league contract.

Owings also gets a spring training invite. The 29-year-old right-hander was non-tendered by the Diamondbacks in December after posting a 3.57 ERA and 44/23 K/BB ratio over 63 innings last season. He’ll try to win a spot in San Diego’s bullpen. Perhaps his ability with the bat will give him the edge for a roster spot.

Padres and RHP Dustin Moseley avoided arbitration by agreeing on a one-year contract.

No word on the contract terms. Moseley requested $2.55 million and was offered $1.5 million when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier this month. The 31-year-old right-hander posted a 3.30 ERA and 64/36 K/BB ratio over 120 innings last season and projects to open 2012 in the Padres’ starting rotation.

Clayton Richard (Padres)

1/23/12 6:48 pm

Padres and LHP Clayton Richard avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract.

Terms aren’t yet available. Richard requested $3.1 million and was offered $2.35 million by the Padres when arbitration figures were exchanged last week, so they likely agreed to terms somewhere in the middle. The 28-year-old left-hander posted a 3.88 ERA and 53/38 K/BB ratio over 99 2/3 innings in 2011 before undergoing season-ending surgery on his left shoulder in July, but he’s expected to be 100 percent for spring training.

David Eckstein (Padres)

1/22/12 5:39 pm

David Eckstein’s agent denied reports that his client is retiring.

“If the right opportunity arises, he will play,” Ryan Gleichowski said. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reported over the weekend that Eckstein had officially decided to retire. Jon Heyman tweeted Sunday that Eckstein had the opportunity to play for the Mariners last season, but opted against it. The 37-year-old didn’t play in 2011. The former World Series MVP has played 10 seasons and has a .280/.345/.355 career batting line.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that David Eckstein has officially decided to retire.

But, he’s decided to hang up his cleats even though there were some teams willing to offer him a minor league contract. The former World Series MVP played 10 seasons and finishes with a .280/.345/.355 career batting line.

Clayton Richard (Padres)

1/17/12 11:50 pm

Clayton Richard requested $3.1 million and was offered $2.35 million by the Padres when arbitration figures were exchanged Tuesday.

Richard is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. The 28-year-old left-hander posted a 3.88 ERA and 53/38 K/BB ratio over 99 2/3 innings in 2011 before undergoing season-ending surgery on his left shoulder in July, but he’s expected to be 100 percent for spring training. The two sides have some ground to make up in order to prevent a hearing next month.
