MLB.com’s William Ladson reports that Danny Espinosa has a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder.

The injury was originally described as a bone bruise in September, but more extensive damage was found in the offseason. According to Ladson, Espinosa doesn’t expect to miss any time and plans to be medically cleared for the start of spring training.

Chad Tracy (Nationals)

Chad Tracy told reporters Saturday that he’s fully recovered from offseason knee surgery.

Tracy is three months removed from the arthroscopic procedure and expects to be medically cleared for spring training. He signed a one-year, $1 million extension in August and should return as a useful pinch-hitter for the Nationals after batting .269/.343/.441 with three home runs, 14 RBI and a .784 OPS in 105 plate appearances.

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo reiterated Saturday that he’s still in ongoing negotiations with Jordan Zimmermann.

Zimmermann requested $5.8 million and was offered $4.6 million when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier this month, so the Nationals are looking to buy out his remaining years on a long-term contract. If an extension can’t be worked out, the two sides will likely settle somewhere around the midpoint of $5.2 million.

Elijah Dukes (Nationals)

1/22/13 11:00 am

Elijah Dukes was arrested in Tampa on Monday night on a warrant related to several previous charges.

Things just keep getting worse for the former top prospect. The warrant was related to a February 2012 arrest when he attempted to eat marijuana out of bag after being pulled over for a routine traffic stop. As a result, he was charged with destroying evidence, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with a suspended or revoked license. Monday’s arrest carried a new charge of driving with a suspended or revoked license. As of Tuesday morning, he was being held without bail. The 27-year-old hasn’t appeared in the majors since 2009 as a member of the Nationals.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said he’s “definitely open minded” about signing Jordan Zimmermann and Ian Desmond to long-term extensions.

Desmond avoided arbitration last week with a $3.7 million deal, and Rizzo hopes he can also avoid a hearing with Zimmermann, who requested $5.8 million and was offered $4.6 million from the Nats. Both players are under team control through 2016, so it’s not a necessity to work out a long-term deal at this time.

Jordan Zimmerman requested $5.8 million and was offered $4.6 million from the Nationals when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday.

Zimmerman is arbitration-eligible for the second time after he posted a 2.94 ERA and 153/43 K/BB ratio over 195 2/3 innings last season. Look for the two sides to settle somewhere around the midpoint of $5.2 million.

Tyler Clippard (Nationals)

Nationals and RHP Tyler Clippard avoided arbitration by agreeing to a contract.

No word yet on the terms involved. Clippard was arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter after earning $1.65 million last season. The Nationals have come to terms with six of their seven arbitration-eligible players, leaving only right-hander Jordan Zimmermann.

Ian Desmond (Nationals)

1/18/13 3:48 pm

Nationals avoided arbitration with SS Ian Desmond by agreeing to a one-year, $3.8 million contract.

It’s a healthy raise for Desmond, who was in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The bump in pay is well earned, though, after the 27-year-old experienced a breakout year in 2012, batting .292/.335/.511 with 25 homers and 21 steals. He’ll be the everyday shortstop again this season.

Roger Bernadina (Nationals)

1/18/13 1:06 pm

Nationals avoided arbitration with OF Roger Bernadina by agreeing to a one-year contract.

The financials aren’t yet known. Bernadina, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time, sported a nice .291/.372/.405 with five homers and 15 steals in 2012. He’s a nice piece to have as an extra outfielder.

Craig Stammen (Nationals)

1/18/13 12:46 pm

Nationals avoided arbitration with RHP Craig Stammen by agreeing to a two-year contract.

The financials of the deal aren’t known. Stammen, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time as a Super 2 qualifier, held a 2.34 ERA while striking out a batter per inning for the Nats last season.
