Ike Davis (Mets)

5/17/12 8:17 am

Mets manager Terry Collins said Wednesday that Ike Davis is “doubtful” to be demoted to the minor leagues.

Davis is batting just .167/.222/.310 in 36 games this year, but the Mets are willing to wait out his struggles in the hope that he’s merely shaking off the rust from a shortened 2011 campaign. Davis does have five home runs this season and still owns a .772 career OPS.

Johan Santana (Mets)

5/16/12 9:53 pm

Johan Santana held the Reds to two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings of work on Wednesday, but got stuck with a no-decision in New York’s 6-3 loss.

He struck out five and walked two. Santana served up a solo home run to Todd Frazier in the seventh before watching his bullpen allow four more runs before the night was through. The quality start was Santana’s fifth straight, and leaves him with a 2.89 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 46/14 K/BB ratio through his first 43 2/3 innings. If he’s not “back,” he’s close to it. He’ll get the light-hitting Pirates in Pittsburgh on Monday.

Robert Carson (Mets)

5/16/12 9:49 pm

Mets recalled LHP Robert Carson from Double-A Binghamton.

He’ll take the spot of D.J. Carrasco, who was designated for assignment. Carson was called up last month by the Mets but didn’t make an appearance. He holds a 1.84 ERA and 13/4 K/BB ratio over 14 2/3 innings for Binghamton.

Lucas Duda (Mets)

5/16/12 9:48 pm

Lucas Duda went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored in Wednesday’s loss to the Reds.

All three hits were singles for Duda, who hasn’t homered since April 28 (13 games). The popular sleeper choice is batting a solid .274/.358/.402 through New York’s first 37 games, however. It could be only a matter of time before the home runs come.

D.J. Carrasco (Mets)

5/16/12 9:37 pm

Mets designated RHP D.J. Carrasco for assignment.

Carrasco served up a go-ahead, two-run homer in Wednesday’s loss to the Reds, pushing his ERA up to 7.36 over just four appearances. He posted an ugly 6.02 ERA and 1.68 WHIP over 42 games last year for the Mets. A corresponding roster move hasn’t been announced.

Josh Thole (Mets)

5/16/12 6:00 pm

Josh Thole (concussion) has been cleared for non-baseball activities.

It’s a big step in the right direction for Thole, who was placed on MLB’s new 7-day disabled list earlier this month with a concussion. He remains out indefinitely.

Andres Torres (Mets)

5/16/12 2:09 pm

Andres Torres is not in Wednesday’s lineup against the Reds.

We’re assuming he’s just getting the night off. Kirk Nieuwenhuis will play center field in his place and bat leadoff while Mike Baxter makes a rare start in left field and hits No 2.

Jenrry Mejia (Mets)

5/16/12 1:34 pm

Jenrry Mejia (elbow) will make his next start Saturday with Double-A Binghamton.

Mejia, who is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, posted a 2.45 ERA and 8/2 K/BB ratio in 11 innings over two starts with High-A St. Lucie. The Mets will continue to use him as a starter for now, though he could eventually be groomed as a reliever before joining the major league roster.

Chris Young (Mets)

5/16/12 11:35 am

Chris Young (shoulder) gave up three runs over 5 2/3 innings Wednesday in his second start with High-A St. Lucie.

Young gave up seven hits while striking out two and walking none. He should make his next start with Triple-A Buffalo and could join the Mets’ rotation by early-to-mid June. Of course, given his lengthy injury history, he can’t be counted on to stay healthy.

Jason Bay (Mets)

5/16/12 9:34 am

Mets manager Terry Collins indicated Tuesday that Jason Bay (rib) will get his starting left field job back when he returns from the disabled list.

“Absolutely,” said Collins. “He didn?t come here to be an extra player.” Bay was recently cleared for baseball activities, but is likely about 10 days to two weeks away from coming off the disabled list. We think a platoon with rookie Kirk Nieuwenhuis is inevitable, but the Mets will at least give Bay an opportunity to keep his job. The 33-year-old was hitting .240 with three homers and a .776 OPS over his first 50 at-bats prior to suffering a non-displaced fractured rib on April 23.
