Ruben Tejada (Mets)

2/22/12 1:13 pm

Mets manager Terry Collins said Wednesday that he would have liked to see Ruben Tejada arrive to camp early.

Tejada ran into a bit of a delay in his native Panama due to a visa issue, but is expected to arrive by the required report date on Saturday. It’s ultimately not a big issue, but Collins clearly wanted his new everyday shortstop to show some initiative.

Updating a previous item, Mets manager Terry Collins said Ike Davis will resume practicing with the team on Thursday.

Davis was sent back to New York on Wednesday for additional tests related to his physical, but he has been cleared of any issue. The team said the visit wasn’t related to his ankle, so there’s no reason to be concerned about his long-term status.

We know what you’re thinking, but the Mets are saying that his ankle isn’t the reason for his visit and that he should be back in camp on Thursday. The 24-year-old first baseman batted .302/.383/.543 with seven homers and 25 RBI in 36 games last season and carries serious sleeper potential if healthy.

Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen said Tuesday that Pedro Beato could be converted to a starter if he does not make the 25-man roster out of spring training.

The Mets have delayed Jenrry Mejia’s (elbow) first mound session as a precautionary measure.

Mejia was scheduled to take the bump Tuesday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery last May. But the Mets have decided not to rush things. The 22-year-old should be cleared to step atop a mound within the next several days.

Jon Niese underwent rhinoplasty this winter.

In other words, he got a nose job. Niese told reporters Monday morning in Mets camp that the decision to have the surgery was made first for aesthetic reasons but has also greatly improved his breathing. He’s claiming to be in better shape than ever because his cardio workouts this offseason were far less taxing.

Bobby Parnell (Mets)

2/18/12 2:15 pm

General manager Sandy Alderson indicated that Bobby Parnell could begin the season in Triple-A and that his status with the team is contingent on whether the Mets carry a second left-hander such as Daniel Herrera or Miguel Batista.

“I think Bobby has got an outstanding future, and it’s just a question of where he’ll pitch and to what extent it clicks this year,” Alderson said. “But, at the same time, we’ve got fewer spots available than we have quality arms at this point.” Parnell, 27, posted a 3.64 ERA and 64/27 K/BB ratio over 59 1/3 innings in 60 games with the Mets this past season. The fact he has an option remaining could put his spot on the 25-man roster in jeopardy.
