Jason Bay (Mets)

5/21/12 3:27 pm

Jason Bay (rib) is scheduled to travel to Florida on Monday to continue baseball activities.

Bay, who is currently rehabbing a non-displaced rib fracture, is scheduled to begin taking batting practice off coaches on Wednesday. He is expected to be eased into action as DH in rehab games before playing the field. He’s likely two weeks away from rejoining the Mets.

Ike Davis (Mets)

5/21/12 2:09 pm

Ike Davis is not in Monday’s starting lineup.

The Mets are facing Pirates left-hander Erik Bedard and don’t want to make things more difficult than they already are on Davis. He is batting just .163/.221/.304. Vinny Rottino will get the start at first base.

Vinny Rottino (Mets)

5/21/12 12:55 pm

Mets recalled UTIL Vinny Rottino from Triple-A Buffalo.

Rottino is batting .307/.361/.479 in 155 plate appearances this year in Triple-A but is doubtful to come close to that level of production in the bigs. He’ll meet up with the Mets in Pittsburgh and act as a utilityman.

Chris Schwinden (Mets)

5/21/12 12:52 pm

Mets optioned RHP Chris Schwinden to Triple-A Buffalo.

Schwinden has allowed 13 hits and 11 runs in eight innings of relief this season for the Mets. The 25-year-old will continue to function as organizational depth.

Jeremy Hefner (Mets)

5/21/12 12:36 pm

Jeremy Hefner has officially been named the starter for Thursday’s game against the Padres.

It is Miguel Batista’s usual turn through the rotation, but he is sidelined currently with a back injury. Hefner, 26, has posted a 2.72 ERA in seven starts this season at Triple-A Buffalo. He’s a decent streamer option in NL-only fantasy leagues against the light-hitting San Diego lineup.

Jason Bay (Mets)

5/20/12 5:14 pm

Jason Bay (rib) plans to take batting practice Monday.

Bay hit off a tee Sunday. It’s encouraging that he is progressing this quickly following a non-displaced fracture of a rib on the left side. ESPN New York speculates that Bay could return in one week.

David Wright (Mets)

5/20/12 3:56 pm

David Wright went 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and pair of RBI in Sunday’s win over the Blue Jays.

One day after sitting out with the flu, Wright also drew his 28th walk of the season. Hitting an incredible .412/.513/.626 through New York’s first 41 games, Wright is well on his way toward his sixth All Star appearance.

Frank Francisco (Mets)

5/20/12 3:51 pm

Frank Francisco notched his first save in six days in Sunday’s win over the Blue Jays, allowing a walk and a hit while fanning three in an inning of work.

Francisco appeared on the verge of another meltdown after issuing a leadoff walk to Yunel Escobar and allowing a single to Jose Bautista, but he settled down to fan Edwin Encarnacion, J.P. Arencibia and Eric Thames in order to end the game. All three punchouts were of the swinging variety. It’s rarely been pretty, but Francisco has now allowed “only” one run in three innings of work after failing to record an out against the Marlins last Sunday. He remains the Amazins stopper until further notice.
