Hanley Ramirez (Marlins)

2/21/12 4:00 pm

Hanley Ramirez indicated Tuesday in Marlins camp that he’s content with playing third base this year.

Ramirez has been moved to the hot corner to accommodate new shortstop Jose Reyes. Initial reports suggested Hanley was upset about the situation, but he cleared that up on Tuesday morning. “I never said I?m not going to do it,” Ramirez told reporters. “I?m just happy to be here, be back in the spring with my guys, my teammates, everybody’s happy. That’s what we need.”

Juan Carlos Oviedo (Marlins)

2/20/12 11:58 am

Juan Carlos Oviedo won’t report to camp on time.

Oviedo is still working through legal issues in the Dominican Republic after admitting to falsifying his identity near the end of the 2011 season. He could also face discipline from Major League Baseball once he is finally cleared to travel to the United States. It’s not yet clear when the right-hander might be active again. Heath Bell will be the Marlins’ closer in 2012.

Scott Cousins (Marlins)

2/19/12 1:04 pm

Scott Cousins said he is fully recovered from lower back and hip injuries that caused him to miss most of the final four months of the season last year.

More known for his collision with Buster Posey than anything else, Cousins batted just .135/.224/.212 over 58 plate appearances for the Marlins last season. He’s a career .277/.338/.450 hitter in the minors, though, and has some pop and some speed. The 27-year-old should be able to nail down a bench spot this spring for the Marlins.

Hanley Ramirez (Marlins)

2/18/12 11:58 am

Hanley Ramirez indicated he’s willing to play third base and that his relationship with Jose Reyes and manager Ozzie Guillen will not be damaged.

“Folks, via this medium I want to let everyone know that what came out in the newspaper Hoy about me, the team and Guillen is a lie,” Ramirez said. ”The whole world knows I?m going to play third base with the Marlins. Third base forever baby.” Earlier this week Guillen said that Ramirez is not “100 percent on board” with moving to third base to accommodate Reyes, but that he expects him to be 100 percent on board by Opening Day.

Asked Thursday whether he’s comfortable moving to third base to accommodate new shortstop Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez responded: “I have nothing to say.”

Marlins skipper Ozzie Guillen confirmed earlier this week that Ramirez is still unhappy about the position change. The thought (or, rather, hope) is that Hanley will come around to it by the start of the regular season. “I expect him to be 100 percent on board with this move when we play St. Louis (on Opening Night),” Guillen told reporters on Tuesday. “Right now, just let it be, man.”

Josh Johnson (Marlins)

2/15/12 2:32 pm

Josh Johnson (shoulder) is currently throwing off a mound three days a week.

Johnson was limited to just nine starts last season to shoulder issues, but he’s been throwing pain-free off a mound since mid-January and doesn’t expect to have any restrictions entering spring training. “I feel great. No problems,” said Johnson. “I don’t feel anything in there.” The Marlins are hoping their ace right-hander will be ready to toe the rubber on Opening Night against the Cardinals on April 4.

Hanley Ramirez (Marlins)

2/14/12 7:47 pm

Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said Tuesday that Hanley Ramirez is not “100 percent on board” with moving to third base to accommodate shortstop Jose Reyes.

“No,” Guillen told a group of reporters. “No, Hanley is not 100 percent on board. Not yet. The last time I talked to him, no. But I don’t expect him to be. I expect him to be 100 percent on board with this move when we play St. Louis (on Opening Night). Right now, just let it be, man.” There could be some drama in Marlins camp this spring if Hanley grows frustrated with trying to learn his new gig. But it’s currently the only option for the Fish.

Josh Johnson (Marlins)

2/12/12 4:44 pm

Josh Johnson threw his first bullpen session of the year on Friday and felt no discomfort, according to The Sports Xchange.

Johnson showed up to the club’s spring training complex in Jupiter Thursday and expects to be ready for workouts on February 22. The ace right-hander should be healthy enough to pitch at the start of spring training and is poised to enter the 2012 campaign with a clean bill of health. Obviously owners need to be aware of the risk inherent to drafting Johnson, but if he’s your second fantasy starter, you’ve done pretty well. The right-hander made only nine starts in 2011 due to shoulder issues, but he has a sparkling 2.98 career ERA.

Omar Infante (Marlins)

2/9/12 4:28 pm

Omar Infante developed minor soreness in his elbow this winter, but expects to be fine for spring training.

Infante reported to Marlins camp two weeks ago to get treatment and has been feeling better since. The second baseman developed the soreness while lifting weights last month in his native Venezuela. He hopes to have no restrictions when camp opens.
