Shawn Kelley (Mariners)

1/18/13 7:32 pm

Shawn Kelley requested $1.2 million and was offered $750,000 from the Mariners when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday.

Kelley is arbitration eligible for the second time due to his status as a super-two player. He’s coming off a solid 2012 campaign where he posted a 3.25 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 45/15 K/BB ratio in 44 1/3 innings. He’ll return to his middle relief role with the M’s in 2013.

Brendan Ryan (Mariners)

1/18/13 2:34 pm

Mariners avoided arbitration with SS Brendan Ryan by agreeing to a one-year contract.

Financial terms are not yet known. Ryan is a defensive wizard but is coming off a year where he batted just .194/.277/.278. He’ll be the starting shortstop on Opening Day, but the M’s could eventually seek a replacement.

Kendrys Morales (Mariners)

1/18/13 1:57 pm

Mariners avoided arbitration with 1B/DH Kendrys Morales by agreeing to a one-year, $5.25 million contract.

It was Morales’ final year of arbitration eligibility before he hits free agency next winter. The 29-year-old batted .273/.320/.467 with 22 homers in 2012 after missing most of the previous two seasons due to a serious leg injury.

Mike Carp (Mariners)

1/17/13 9:08 am

The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham suggests the Red Sox could have interest in trading for Mike Carp.

Carp is expendable following the Mariners’ addition of Michael Morse, and the Red Sox are looking to improve their bench with a lefthanded hitter who can play first base and corner outfield. Coming off an injury-shortened season in 2012, Carp batted just .213/.312/.341 in 59 games with Seattle, but remains an intriguing power prospect. The Red Sox have also expressed interest in signing free agents Casey Kotchman, Lyle Overbay, and Nick Johnson.

Michael Morse (Mariners)

1/16/13 7:54 pm

Mariners acquired 1B/OF Michael Morse from the Nationals in a three-team trade.

The deal, which will send John Jaso to Oakland and A.J. Cole, Blake Treinen and a player to be named later to Washington, is now official. Morse, of course, began his career with the Mariners and now will play every day at a corner outfield spot. The 30-year-old has batted .297/.343/.515 with 49 homers over the last two years for Washington.

Justin Smoak (Mariners)

1/13/13 10:01 pm

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes that the Red Sox have “checked in” with Seattle about a trade for Justin Smoak.

Smoak has been subject to trade rumors following the Mariners’ addition of Kendrys Morales, but he would only become an option for Boston if the Mike Napoli deal isn’t finalized. Cafardo also confirms that the Red Sox worked out Bobby Abreu this offseason, and have expressed interest in free agents Casey Kotchman, Lyle Overbay, and Nick Johnson.

Michael Saunders (Mariners)

1/12/13 4:52 pm

As expected, Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders will suit up for Canada in the World Baseball Classic.

It’s a nice honor for the 26-year-old outfielder. He’s coming off a breakout season in which he hit .247/.306/.432 with 19 homers, 57 RBI and 21 stolen bases. He’s intriguing blend of power and speed should make him a nice late-round target in fantasy drafts.

Jhonny Nunez (Mariners)

1/11/13 9:46 pm

Mariners signed RHP Jhonny Nunez to a minor league contract.

The 27-year-old right-hander posted a horrifying 6.57 ERA and 1.92 WHIP over 37 innings for the White Sox Triple-A affiliate in 2012. He’ll serve as nothing more than bullpen depth at the minor league level.

Milton Bradley (Mariners)

1/11/13 3:07 pm

TMZ.com reports that Milton Bradley has been charged with 13 counts related to several alleged attacks on his estranged wife and could get up to 13 years in prison.

According to the report, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office has filed charges against Bradley, 34, stemming from five different incidents involving spousal battery, criminal threats, assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism and dissuading a witness from making a report. A .271/.364/.440 hitter over 12 seasons, Bradley never retired, but he didn’t play in 2012 and is career in baseball is obviously over.

Danny Hultzen (Mariners)

1/10/13 9:11 pm

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Mariners offered one of Danny Hultzen, James Paxton or Taijuan Walker, plus Nick Franklin, Charlie Furbush and Stephen Pryor to the Diamondbacks for Justin Upton.

It would have been quite a haul for the D’Backs, but it’s a moot point unless Upton changes his mind and winds up accepting a deal to the Mariners. While the M’s are one of four teams on Upton’s no-trade list, it’s possible a deal could be revived. The Rangers and Braves are also in the mix.
