Brian Wilson (Giants)

1/14/13 4:32 pm

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Giants are willing to offer Brian Wilson (elbow) a major league contract.

The Mets have “strong interest” in Wilson and even watched him in a private workout on Saturday, but one source speculated to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York on Sunday that the club would prefer to sign him to a minor league contract. It’s highly unlikely he’ll be willing to agree to that, so the money is undoubtedly a factor, but he may also prefer to go somewhere which presents the best opportunity to close. That may not be San Francisco.

Brian Wilson (Giants)

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Sunday that he’s “not sure” if the team will offer Brian Wilson a contract.

The Mets held a private throwing session for Wilson Saturday, and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale said the team has “strong interest” in the closer. Evidently, though, it’s not even a given that they’ll extend him an offer. Wilson, of course, is coming back from Tommy John surgery but expects to be ready to go for Opening Day.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that the Mets have “strong interest” in Brian Wilson.

Nightengale notes that Mets general manager Sandy Alderson watched Wilson during a private workout Saturday. It’s not clear whether he threw off a mound during the workout, which is something he’s expected to be cleared to do soon. The Mets would give Wilson their closer job, sending Frank Francisco to a setup role. “The Beard” is reportedly drawing interest from 9-10 clubs.

Giants signed INF Kensuke Tanaka to a minor league contract.

He’s been given an invitation to spring training and will compete for a utility job. Tanaka batted .300/.350/.363 with three homers and 13 steals this past season for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters this past season and doesn’t project as an impact player.

Brian Wilson (Giants)

1/9/13 6:33 pm

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Henry Schulman reports that Brian Wilson (elbow) has completed his long-toss program and could throw off a mound soon.

So far, so good for the bearded closer, who has been told by Dr. James Andrews that he should be cleared for spring training and be ready by opening day. Schulman notes that the Giants are “still open to signing Wilson to a low base, high incentives” deal, but the righty is “keeping his deliberations on a new team close to the vest.” He’ll likely wait to sign until he shows teams he can throw off the mound with no issues.

Buster Posey (Giants)

1/9/13 9:26 am

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants have yet to begin contract discussions with Buster Posey.

Posey is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter, and the Giants could look to sign him to a long-term extension. Coming off an MVP season, Schulman suggests that a good starting point in talks would be the $53.5 million given to Tim Lincecum during his four-years of arbitration eligibility. ESPN’s Buster Olney believes Posey could get a a Joey Votto-type extension.

Freddy Sanchez (Giants)

1/7/13 9:14 pm

Freddy Sanchez’s agent, Paul Cobbe, has told ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick that “about 20 teams” have asked for the second baseman’s medical records.

Cobbe contends that his client is healthy and ready to contribute in 2013. Sanchez missed all of 2012 due to shoulder and back surgeries, but he was able to play in several instructional league games as a DH. He’s a huge health risk for the upcoming campaign but could be worth a shot on a non-guaranteed deal.
