Pablo Sandoval (Giants)

2/2/13 6:37 pm

As if leading the Giants to a Championship and being named World Series MVP wasn’t enough, Pablo Sandoval was named MVP of the Venezuelan Winter League.

Sandoval led his team, the Navegantes del Magallanes, to their first series title since the 2002 season. He batted .300 with three homers and nine RBI in the series. The 26-year-old has a knack for putting up tremendous offensive numbers when healthy, and could be poised for a big encore performance in 2013.

Brian Wilson (Giants)

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Sunday that he plans to see Brian Wilson (elbow) throw again soon.

“May go back and see him in the next several days, and he’s still in our mix,” Alderson said of the bearded reliever. There have been reports saying the Mets weren’t impressed the first time they saw Wilson throw and would only be willing to offer him a minor league deal. Wilson, of course, is coming back from Tommy John surgery but expects to be ready for Opening Day.

Joaquin Arias (Giants)

1/25/13 1:12 pm

Giants avoided arbitration with INF Joaquin Arias by agreeing to a one-year, $925,000 contract.

It’s the midpoint between the figures that were exchanged earlier this month. Arias, 28, was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter after hitting .270/.304/.389 with a .693 OPS in 344 plate appearances last season.

Todd Linden (Giants)

1/25/13 10:34 am

Giants re-signed OF Todd Linden to a minor league contract.

Linden, 32, batted .280/.368/.449 with 11 homers and 66 RBI at Triple-A for the Giants in 2012. He hasn’t appeared in the majors since 2007.

Buster Posey (Giants)

1/23/13 9:45 am

FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports that the Giants and Buster Posey have mutual interest in reaching a long-term contract, but that there’s no real urgency to complete a deal.

Posey, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter as Super Two player, agreed to a one-year, $8 million contract with the Giants last week. Rosenthal speculates that a seven-year, $120 million extension, buying out his three remaining arbitration seasons and his first four years of free agency, might be enough to get a long-term deal done. However, there’s no indication that anything is imminent.

Pablo Sandoval (Giants)

1/19/13 5:21 pm

Pablo Sandoval has returned to the lineup for Navegantes del Magallanes in Venezuelan Winter League playoffs after being hospitalized on Wednesday due to non-specified abdominal pain.

The issue was not thought to be serious, and the fact that he’s already returned to the lineup is a very encouraging sign. Sandoval remains an intriguing target on draft day due to his high average and power potential.

Brian Wilson (Giants)

1/19/13 2:20 pm

Giants GM Brian Sabean all but confirmed that free agent Brian Wilson (elbow) won’t be returning this season.

“I?m going to be brutally honest as I always am, I don?t think [Wilson will return],” Sabean said. “In this case, where you are getting a second Tommy John, it’s the type of rehab where he’s still not further up along to judge exactly where he may be able to come back in major league fashion, let alone as a closer.” Wilson is tentatively expected to be ready for Opening Day, but failed to impress the Mets in a workout last weekend, and has yet to receive any formal offers. While the Giants don’t expect to bringing him back, Sabean did leave open the possibility that Wilson could return on an incentive-laden, one-year contract.

Joaquin Arias (Giants)

1/18/13 7:08 pm

Joaquin Arias requested $1.1 million and was offered $750,000 from the Giants when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday.

Arias, 28, is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter after hitting .270/.304/.389 with a .693 OPS in 344 plate appearances last season. It shouldn’t take too much time to hammer out a satisfactory agreement.

Sergio Romo (Giants)

1/18/13 5:53 pm

Sergio Romo requested $4.5 million and was offered $2.675 million by the Giants when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday.

Romo, who is arbitration-eligible for the second time, earned $1.575 million last season while posting a 1.79 ERA, 14 saves and a 63/10 K/BB ratio over 55 1/3 innings. His request isn’t unreasonable, but settling around the midpoint of $3.59 million could be a decent compromise.

Buster Posey (Giants)

1/18/13 2:28 pm

Giants avoided arbitration with C Buster Posey by agreeing to a one-year, $8 million contract.

It’s not a surprising total given that Posey is coming off an MVP season, but it certainly illustrates how expensive he’s going to get in the coming years. The Giants would be wise to seek a long-term deal for the catcher, but they’ve yet to engage in negotiations.
