Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers)

1/25/13 1:18 pm

Clayton Kershaw said his representatives have yet to engage in extension talks with the Dodgers.

The Dodgers are expected to approach the left-hander about the possibility of an extension sometime before spring training, but it obviously hasn’t happened yet. “We?ll see,” Kershaw said. “I don?t have any expectations.” Kershaw will make $11 million in 2013 and will be arbitration-eligible for the final time next winter before hitting free agency. He and Justin Verlander could compete to be the first pitcher to net a $200 million contract.

Scott Elbert (Dodgers)

1/23/13 5:13 pm

Scott Elbert underwent a left elbow arthroscopy on Wednesday afternoon in Los Angles.

Elbert can start physical therapy in three days but won’t be cleared to resume throwing for six weeks. Which means he is highly unlikely to be ready for the start of the 2013 regular season. The 27-year-old lefty posted a superb 2.20 ERA in 32 2/3 innings last summer for Los Angeles before undergoing elbow surgery in mid-September. Wednesday’s procedure was his second in four months.

Matt Kemp (Dodgers)

1/22/13 12:35 pm

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly told Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times that his request for his 2014 option to be picked up was declined.

Mattingly wanted to avoid entering 2013 as a lame duck, so he asked about the option last fall. However, the Dodgers apparently want to see results from their high-priced roster before they commit to him. “I’ve played many years on a one-year contract, so I’m good, but the one area you have to deal with is the questions you’re asking me now,” said Mattingly. “That’s a potential distraction for my club. That becomes part of the story line. My job is to cut out all the noise for these guys. That noise can get us away from playing our best baseball.” Mattingly has a 168?155 record over his first two seasons as skipper of the Dodgers, including a second-place finish in 2012.

Bobby Abreu (Dodgers)

1/21/13 8:31 am

The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson reports that Bobby Abreu’s agent has told the Marlins that his client “would love” to play in Miami.

Whether the interest is reciprocal remains to be seen, but Abreu would certainly have a better opportunity at playing time with the Marlins than he would most other places. The 38-year-old held a workout in his native Venezuela last month, with the Red Sox known to have been one of the teams that watched him. However, Boston doesn’t plan to sign the veteran outfielder.

Justin Sellers (Dodgers)

1/19/13 11:15 pm

Dodgers infielder Justin Sellers was arrested in West Sacramento on Saturday for reckless driving.

Sellers was caught doing “wheelies” on his motorcycle, and when police tried to pull him over, Sellers took off. After a short chase ensued though, he did turn himself in. This shouldn’t do anything to hurt his chances of making the Dodgers as a reserve infielder.

Matt Kemp (Dodgers)

1/19/13 3:35 pm

Matt Kemp said Saturday that his surgically-repaired left shoulder is healing “ahead of schedule.”

Kemp hasn’t reported any setbacks this offseason and is pain free three months after undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery. He remains on track to be ready for Opening Day and there’s no real reason to think that his issues will become chronic. The 28-year-old center fielder has a remarkable .315/.387/.567 batting line, 62 home runs, 195 RBI and 49 stolen bases in 267 games since the start of the 2011 season.

Austin Gallagher (Dodgers)

1/18/13 4:52 pm

Minor league infielder-outfielder Austin Gallagher was suspended 50 games for testing positive for Methylhexaneamine.

Gallagher, 24, was released by the Dodgers last week after hitting .283/.383/.481 with 15 homers and an .864 OPS in his third straight season in High-A ball. His suspension will begin once he latches on with a new organization.

Ronald Belisario (Dodgers)

1/18/13 3:11 pm

Dodgers avoided arbitration with RHP Ronald Belisario by agreeing to a one-year, $1.45 million contract.

He was arbitration-eligible for the first time as a Super 2 player. Belisario put up a nice 2.54 ERA while striking out nearly a batter per inning last season. He’ll help set up for Brandon League in 2013.

A.J. Ellis (Dodgers)

1/18/13 3:07 pm

Dodgers avoided arbitration with C A.J. Ellis by agreeing to a one-year, $2 million contract.

Ellis was arbitration-eligible for the first time as a Super 2 qualifier. The 31-year-old backstop hit a nice .270/.373/.414 with 13 homers for the Dodgers in 2012 and will be their regular catcher again in 2013.

Hanley Ramirez (Dodgers)

1/17/13 4:40 pm

Hanley Ramirez is on the roster for the Dominican Republic for the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

Jose Reyes and Erick Aybar are also on the team, so Ramirez doesn’t figure to get much playing time at shortstop. The Dodgers were hoping Ramirez would play some shortstop during winter ball, but he was used out of the DH spot, so they can’t be thrilled with this latest development.
