Diamondbacks

Paul Goldschmidt doubled in Wednesday’s loss to the Rockies.

Goldschmidt’s fourth-inning two-bagger off of Jamie Moyer was his only hit in four trips to the plate. He struck out twice. Arizona’s sophomore first baseman is hitting a brutal .219/.278/.343 on the season, but has been slightly better in May, batting .250 to go along with six extra-base hits and seven RBI. He should continue to slowly unthaw.

Chris Young (Diamondbacks)

Chris Young (shoulder) blasted a grand slam during a rehab game for High-A Visalia Wednesday.

Young now has four hits and seven RBI in three rehab games. He’ll go to Triple-A Reno Thursday and looks to have a good chance to rejoin the Diamondbacks over the weekend with how he’s looked at the dish so far. The 28-year-old outfielder has been sidelined since mid-April due to a slight ligament tear in his right shoulder.

Diamondbacks sent 1B-OF David Winfree outright to Triple-A Reno.

It’s a move to take him off the 40-man roster. Winfree is batting .265/.326/.386 with one homer for Reno this season.

Tyler Graham (Diamondbacks)

5/16/12 1:38 pm

Diamondbacks signed OF Tyler Graham to a minor league contract.

Graham was designated for assignment and eventually released by the Giants earlier this month. The 28-year-old owns a .281/.341/.361 batting line over parts of six seasons in the minors. He’ll serve as organizational depth with Triple-A Reno.

Chris Young (Diamondbacks)

Chris Young went 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI Monday in his second minor league rehab game with High-A Visalia.

He also played three innings in center field. Young is 3-for-9 over his first two rehab games and will play a final game with Visalia on Wednesday before heading to Triple-A Reno. There’s a chance he rejoins the D-Backs this weekend.

Wade Miley (Diamondbacks)

5/16/12 12:39 am

Wade Miley yielded one run in 6 2/3 innings in beating the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Miley gave up eight hits, but only Mark Ellis’ solo homer in the sixth did any damage. The rookie left-hander improved to 4-1 with a 2.52 ERA. Daniel Hudson is on the way back, but Miley is not going to be exiting the rotation anytime soon.

Takashi Saito threw a 21-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, his first since aggravating his right calf injury back on April 20.

It was clearly a pretty significant aggravation since he didn’t get on a mound again for three and a half weeks. The D’Backs haven’t offered a timetable on Saito, but he’ll likely need a handful of successful bullpen sessions before being sent on a rehab assignment.

Chris Young (Diamondbacks)

5/15/12 8:12 pm

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Chris Young (shoulder) “outside shot” of playing this weekend against the Royals.

Young began a rehab assignment with High-A Visalia Monday and will stay there through Wednesday before heading to Triple-A Reno. Gibson isn’t putting a timetable on how long Young will remain at Reno, but it sounds like we probably won’t see him with the D’Backs until next week. “It’s a different game … here,” Gibson said. “We?d like him to play most of the time or every day. He’s just not 100 percent yet.”

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Trevor Cahill had “a little different feeling” in his shoulder after his last start but felt good during his bullpen session Tuesday.

It doesn’t sound like anything to worry about, so just file it away at this point. Unless he starts feeling worse, it appears that Cahill will be fine for his scheduled start Thursday in Colorado.

Stephen Drew (Diamondbacks)

5/14/12 8:04 pm

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said that Stephen Drew (ankle) could begin a minor league rehab assignment Sunday with Triple-A Reno.

Drew has been playing in extended spring training games for over a week and was able to slide during a simulated drill Saturday for the first time since ankle surgery. There’s no telling how the ankle will respond to game activity, so his rehab assignment figures to be a lengthy one, but this is obviously an encouraging sign. It would be wise to stash him on a DL spot if he’s still available in your fantasy league.
