Cardinals

Adam Wainwright (Cardinals)

5/17/12 5:54 pm

Adam Wainwright allowed five runs — two earned — in 5 2/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Giants.

The Cardinals made two errors behind Wainwright and one more right after he left the game, leading to the third unearned run. So it was hardly all his fault. Still, he ended up with four walks and just one strikeout against a lineup that doesn’t quite rate with the best the league has to offer. Put this one in the “discouraging” category.

Carlos Beltran (Cardinals)

5/17/12 5:49 pm

Carlos Beltran popped out as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning of Thursday’s game.

Beltran missed a fourth straight start due to a sore knee and foot. That he was able to pinch-hit today suggests that he’ll return to the lineup sometime this weekend.

Kyle McClellan (Cardinals)

5/17/12 5:43 pm

Kyle McClellan left Thursday’s game against the Giants in the bottom of the seventh inning with an elbow injury.

McClellan allowed two hits and two walks over one-third of an inning before being replaced by Mitchell Boggs. The severity of the injury isn’t yet clear, but we should learn more on his status after the game.

Rafael Furcal (Cardinals)

5/17/12 1:44 pm

Rafael Furcal is not in the Cardinals’ lineup Thursday.

It’s just a routine day off for the veteran shortstop, who is hitting a robust .370/.433/.500 so far this season. Daniel Descalso starts at short Thursday against the Giants.

Allen Craig (Cardinals)

5/17/12 1:23 pm

Allen Craig (hamstring) is not in Thursday’s lineup.

Craig made an early exit from Wednesday’s victory over the Giants after feeling a tug in his left hamstring. “It’s just a little tight,” he said Thursday. “I think it’s not that serious. Give it a couple of days.” The 27-year-old is hitting .373/.424/.765 with five home runs and 19 RBI in 13 games this season.

Carlos Beltran (Cardinals)

5/17/12 1:05 pm

Carlos Beltran (knee) is not in Thursday’s lineup.

It’s the fourth straight game that he’s been held out of the starting lineup. Beltran has some soreness in his surgically-repaired right knee and plantar fasciitis in his right foot. The Cardinals are hoping that he’ll be able to avoid the 15-day disabled list, but it doesn’t seem like his health is improving quickly.

Jamie Romak (Cardinals)

5/17/12 10:44 am

Cardinals acquired OF Jamie Romak from the Royals for cash considerations.

Romak has hit just .147 with a .422 OPS in his first 11 games this season at the Triple-A level and is 26 years old, but he slugged 23 home runs at Double-A in 2011. The Cardinals will hope for a big turnaround.

Allen Craig (Cardinals)

5/17/12 7:35 am

Allen Craig felt left hamstring discomfort near the end of Wednesday’s game and is questionable for Thursday.

The Cardinals are also expected to rest Carlos Beltran and Rafael Furcal in their matinee finale against the Giants. Craig, 27, is batting .373/.424/.765 with five home runs, five doubles and 19 RBI through his first 13 games of the 2012 regular season.

Jaime Garcia (Cardinals)

5/17/12 12:22 am

Jaime Garcia breezed by the slumping Giants in Wednesday’s 4-1 win, allowing one run on nine hits in 7 1/3 innings of work.

Garcia issued zero walks for the first time all season while fanning a 2012-high nine in a rare quality road start. The outing leaves him with a 3.68 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 36/15 K/BB ratio through 51 1/3 innings. He’ll get the Padres at home on Monday.

David Freese (Cardinals)

5/17/12 12:17 am

Mired in an 0-for-16 slump, David Freese went 3-for-4 with a home run and double in Wednesday’s win over the Giants.

Freese took tough Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner deep for a solo shot in the seventh before roping an opposite field double off of Steve Edlefsen in the eighth. The home run was his third of the month and eighth of the season. Last season’s World Series hero is now batting .287/.352/.519 through St. Louis’ first 37 games.
