Lance Lynn (Cardinals)

Lance Lynn won’t throw his usual side session Tuesday due to minor hamstring tightness.

Lynn expects to get back on track Wednesday and should have little trouble doing so. The 24-year-old right-hander is being groomed as a setup man in camp this spring.

Lance Lynn (Cardinals)

Cardinals’ manager Mike Matheny said Monday that Lance Lynn, Kyle McClellan and Mitchell Boggs will not be stretched out as starting pitchers during spring training.

“When you have a younger ‘pen, you don’t want to confuse the issue,” said Matheny. “When you have guys who are still trying to find their role … right now we have everybody exactly where we want to be.” Lynn, McClellan and Boggs all have experience as starters, but if Matheny sticks with his current plan, a late injury to one of their starters could push 27-year-old Brandon Dickson into the starting rotation.

Allen Craig (Cardinals)

2/20/12 3:52 pm

Allen Craig (knee surgery) said he expects to begin running and agility drills “in the near future.”

Craig has been limited to weight-room workouts since arriving at the Cardinals’ spring training complex, but he told reporters Monday that he probably could do more. “It’s just one of those things where you only have a certain amount of energy in a day, and right now the focus is on the weight room,” Craig said. “It’s not that I can’t go out and take swings in the cage right now. It’s just not worth doing that and taking away from something else.” He’s likely to be ready for live games by early May.

Adam Wainwright (Cardinals)

2/19/12 5:07 pm

Adam Wainwright (elbow) threw a 33-pitch bullpen session on Sunday.

The rehabbing right-hander, according to MLB.com’s report, said “he feels closer to regular-season ready than he normally does at this point in camp.” Wainwright, who missed the entire 2011 season following Tommy John surgery, has not yet suffered a setback. “I certainly feel good,” Wainwright said. “I’m a very positive thinker. It’s the only way I roll. Guys are coming back [from Tommy John surgery] in 10 months sometime, so there’s no reason to think 12 months is too soon.” Wainwright very well may be a good value in mixed leagues, based on where he’s been going in preliminary fantasy drafts. Monitor his progress this spring.

Jason Motte (Cardinals)

2/19/12 4:09 pm

“Jason (Motte) is our closer,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Sunday.

This isn’t really news, in that Motte was essentially a lock for the job barring a horrific spring or injury, but the public proclamation has to be good for Motte to hear. Tony La Russa only officially proclaimed Motte as the club’s stopper after Game 7 of the World Series — and TLR retired the next day. Motte held a 2.25 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 2011 while striking out nearly a batter per inning, posting a 63/16 K/BB ratio in 68 innings. He has a chance to be one of the better fantasy closers in the NL in 2012.

Yadier Molina (Cardinals)

2/19/12 2:09 pm

Yadier Molina said Sunday that the Cardinals and his representatives have ceased extension talks “for now.”

“We stopped talking about it,” Molina said. “For now, I think. For now, we’ve stopped talking (about extension). For now.” Unlike former teammate Albert Pujols, Molina said he would be willing to discuss an extension during the season if the team approached him. Both sides are interested in hammering out a long-term deal, but it’s not known how close they are in terms of dollars. The four-time Gold Glover is slated to hit free agency next winter.

Chris Carpenter (Cardinals)

2/19/12 10:00 am

The Cardinals could have Chris Carpenter make one or possibly two fewer spring training starts than normal this year.

Carpenter threw a whopping 273 innings between the regular season and playoffs last year, so the team wants to save as many bullets as they can. Other than a stiff back that’s the result of a two-day drive from St. Louis to Florida for spring training, the veteran righty feels fine physically, but the Cards could choose to be proactive. “It’s all going to be based on how he feels,” pitching coach Derek Lilliquist said. “He’s experienced enough that he knows to be prepared for the season. We?ll adjust it and tailor it as we see fit.”

Adam Wainwright (Cardinals)

2/17/12 7:20 pm

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak, manager Mike Matheny and the coaching staff will discuss the pitching plan for Adam Wainwright (elbow) on Saturday.

Wainwright has said that he doesn’t want to be treated any differently from the other pitchers in camp, but the Cardinals will consider modifying the plan if it’s in his best interests. The rehabbing right-hander threw 40 pitches to live hitters Thursday morning and hasn’t had any issues with his surgically-repaired elbow.

Adam Wainwright threw 40 pitches to live hitters Thursday morning in Cardinals camp.

Waino broke the workout into 20-pitch sessions to simulate two innings of work. He reported no issues at all with his surgically-repaired right elbow and continues to progress toward normalcy. “I really don’t feel like I’ve missed a year,” Wainwright told Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It feels like I’m stepping back into something that is comfortable. It feels natural.”
