Ryan Braun (Brewers)

2/22/12 2:30 pm

Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM reports that a decision on Ryan Braun’s appeal is expected this week.

Braun is scheduled to report to Brewers’ camp on Friday, so logic dictates that a decision should be rendered within the next two days. However, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reported last week that he could report to camp without a resolution. If the suspension is upheld, the 2011 National League MVP will sit out of the first 50 games of the season.

Zach Braddock (Brewers)

2/22/12 12:46 pm

Zach Braddock was send home from Brewers’ camp on Wednesday due to illness.

The Brewers naturally didn’t want the rest of the clubhouse getting sick, but he should be back with the club in the next couple of days. Braddock posted a 7.27 ERA and an 18/11 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings in 2011 while dealing with a sleep disorder and personal issues.

Zack Greinke (Brewers)

2/22/12 9:40 am

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin indicated Tuesday that he will speak to owner Mark Attanasio to see how the budget might accommodate a contract extension for Zack Greinke.

“I’ve got to sit down with Mark and look at what we want to do on any contracts,” said Melvin. “I’ve talked to Zack but we haven’t talked about a contract.” Greinke, who is set to hit free agency following the season, said earlier this week that he has no plans to publicly discuss his contract situation and that there’s “no reason” for him to have an agent at the moment.

Corey Hart (Brewers)

2/21/12 4:56 pm

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Tuesday that Corey Hart will work out at first base this spring.

Not a surprise, as Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said as much in a radio interview last month. Hart played a lot of first base in the minors, but has only started one game at the position in the majors. Mat Gamel will finally get his chance to sink or swim at first base this season, but Hart at least offers an alternative in certain situations.

Zach Braddock (Brewers)

2/20/12 5:05 pm

Zach Braddock said Monday that he looks forward to competing for a bullpen spot after dealing with a sleep disorder and personal issues last year.

Braddock had a 7.27 ERA and an 18/11 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings last season and didn’t throw another pitch after being placed on the inactive list in July. “I feel great,” said Braddock. “I just had to take some time and address things. I went to Triple-A for a little bit, then I did shut it down and concentrated on some personal things.” Braddock had a 2.94 ERA over 46 relief appearances during his rookie campaign in 2010, but he would likely need a very strong spring to win a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Zack Greinke (Brewers)

2/20/12 4:07 pm

Zack Greinke said Monday that he has no plans to publicly discuss his contract situation.

Greinke said last month that he planned to talk to the Brewers about an extension, but he wouldn’t say Monday whether any progress has been made. “I’m not even going to talk about that, sorry, because I get annoyed when other people talk about it,” said Greinke. “I already did earlier. It’s the same stuff. Nothing’s changed.” Greinke, who is representing himself after leaving CAA Sports in December, is owed $13.5 million this season before hitting free agency.

Mark Rogers (Brewers)

2/20/12 11:01 am

Mark Rogers is recovered from carpal tunnel surgery.

Rogers still has six games remaining on last year’s 25-game stimulant suspension, but he’ll be ready to rock once that has been served. The 26-year-old posted a 9.34 ERA in 44 1/3 minor leauge innings last season but is likely to open 2012 at Triple-A.

Francisco Rodriguez may file a grievance or lawsuit, citing malpractice or fraud, against his former agents this week regarding a no-trade clause in his last contract.

K-Rod, pitching out the final year of a three-year, $37 million contract with the Mets in 2011, believed he had a no-trade clause that outlined 10 teams he couldn’t be dealt to, including the Brewers. Instead, Rodriguez discovered in July that his former agents, Paul Kinzer and Arn Tellem, never filed the no-trade paperwork and he was shipped to Milwaukee, where he was pushed to a setup role and likely saw his free agent value drop. Rodriguez fired Kinzer and Tellem and hired Scott Boras. “He’s going to lose a lot of money, the question is whether it’s seven figures or eight figures,” said attorney Richard Johnson, who said the Wasserman Group, for which Kinzer and Tellem work, backed out of at least a $1 million damage payment before the eventual mediation hearing. “There’s long-term damage to his career. He wasn’t even in position to be marketed as a closer last winter. They really [messed] with his career in a monumental way.” Rodriguez earned $11.5 million in 20

Santo Manzanillo (Brewers)

2/19/12 9:31 am

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Santo Manzanillo is recovering well from a separated pitching shoulder.

Manzanillo suffered the injury back in November in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic. “He’s been throwing (on the minor-league side), and he’s throwing really well,” Roenicke said. “He has recovered fast. He’s doing well.” Manzanillo is an intriguing relief prospect, but the 22-year-old will likely begin the year in the minors.

Francisco Rodriguez is expected to arrive to the Brewers’ spring training camp a few days late.

It’s not clear what the reasoning is, but evidently K-Rod is still in his native Venezuela. The Brewers aren’t concerned, though. “We are not in the least bit concerned (about Rodriguez coming later),” said assistant general manager Gord Ash. “Late-inning relievers, especially veterans, don’t need as much time to get ready to pitch. He also pitched a little in winter ball.”
