Jair Jurrjens (Braves)

2/2/13 4:24 pm

The Orioles are expected to announce the signing of free agent starter Jair Jurrjens to a one-year, $1.5 million contract early next week.

Jurrjens is completing his physical, and club officials expect to officially announce the season as soon as Monday. The 27-year-old right-hander still has minor league options remaining, and could open the season at Triple-A if he doesn’t make the rotation out of spring training.

Brandon Beachy (Braves)

Brandon Beachy (elbow) has been throwing long-toss from 120 feet but is expecting to increase the distance to 150 within the next week as he continues his rehab from Tommy John surgery.

Beachy had the surgery last June and is hoping to return to the rotation sometime in late June. After stepping up the long-toss efforts, Beachy’s next step will be simulating his throwing motion from flat ground. If everything goes according to plan, Beachy could be cleared to begin throwing off a mound with a controlled motion around the start of spring training.

Michael Bourn (Braves)

1/30/13 9:49 am

T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports that the Rangers have not renewed their interest in free agent outfielder Michael Bourn.

And Sullivan hears that the Rangers aren’t expected to change their stance if Nelson Cruz is suspended, as they would likely go with Mitch Moreland or Mike Olt in the outfield. Bourn reportedly wants a five-year contract, but it’s hard to see who will be willing to give it to him.

Michael Bourn (Braves)

1/29/13 8:51 am

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Mets general manager Sandy Alderson and assistant general manager John Ricco traveled to Houston last week to have dinner with free agent center fielder Michael Bourn and his agent, Scott Boras.

It was described as more of a “getting-to-know-you session” than a negotiation, but it shows that the Mets are seriously considering making a run at Bourn. Still, the Mets don’t want to give more than three years to a player who relies on his legs and will not sign him without “iron-clad assurances” they only have to surrender a second-round pick. Meanwhile, the commissioners office is against making an exception for the Mets this late in the offseason. The combination of factors makes an agreement between the two sides a long shot.

Michael Bourn (Braves)

1/28/13 3:12 pm

Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that free agent outfielder Michael Bourn wants a five-year contract.

Puma says the Mets “aren’t going there,” and neither is any other major league team. Bourn, because he’s tied to draft pick compensation, is going to have to lower his asking price to attract suitors. The 30-year-old outfielder batted .274/.348/.391 with nine homers, 57 RBI and 42 stolen bases in 155 games last season for the Braves.

Lyle Overbay (Braves)

1/28/13 3:03 pm

According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Brewers are discussing a minor league deal with Lyle Overbay.

Rosenthal says Overbay is also drawing interest from other major league teams and is expected to decide on one soon. He would serve as insurance at first base in Milwaukee behind Mat Gamel, who will be the starter until Corey Hart recovers from knee surgery. Overbay, 36, hit .259/.331/.397 in 131 plate appearances last season between the Diamondbacks and Braves.

Jair Jurrjens (Braves)

1/27/13 10:26 pm

The Baltimore Sun reports that Jair Jurrjens still hasn’t decided whether to pitch for the Netherlands in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

Jurrjens recently signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Orioles and can’t afford to miss any time in spring training if he hopes to open the season in the starting rotation. He also pitched throughout 2012 with a knee brace and blamed a quad injury on his diminished velocity last season. The 26-year-old right-hander doesn’t expect to have a decision until his contract with Baltimore is finalized sometime next week.

Michael Bourn (Braves)

1/26/13 11:03 am

MLB.com’s Richard Justice writes that the Mets have “zero interest” in Michael Bourn if it means losing their top draft pick.

The Mets aren’t close to being relevant in the NL East and would have to give up their first-round pick in order to sign Bourn, though the MLBPA could file a grievance that would allow their pick to be protected. CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reported earlier this week that eight different teams could be looking to make a late run at Bourn, including the Mariners, Rays, and Orioles. The Mariners are also tied to draft pick compensation at 12th overall.

Andrelton Simmons (Braves)

1/25/13 8:08 pm

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Friday that he envisions the top third of his batting order as Andrelton Simmons, Jason Heyward and Justin Upton.

It’s certainly a boon to the fantasy value of the 23-year-old shortstop, as he’ll have ample opportunity to score runs hitting in front of Heyward and Upton. Heyward finished the 2012 season as the third hitter in the Braves lineup, but will gladly move up and let the younger Upton slide into that role.
