Blue Jays

Edwin Encarnacion went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer in Wednesday’s rout of the Yankees.

Encarnacion’s bomb off of Hiroki Kuroda was his 13th of the season, and second in as many days. Hitting as well as he has since his days with the Reds, E5 is already halfway to his 2008 career-high home run total of 26. We like his odds of matching or besting it.

Jose Bautista (Blue Jays)

5/16/12 8:59 pm

Jose Bautista hit his ninth home run in Wednesday’s win over the Yankees.

He also drew a walk and scored a pair of runs. Bautista’s bomb was a solo shot off of Hiroki Kuroda in the fifth. Bautista is still batting just .199/.325/.419, but has made his slump much easier to swallow with all the power. He should breach the Mendoza Line and remain above it for the rest of the season any day now.

Brett Lawrie (Blue Jays)

5/16/12 3:57 pm

Brett Lawrie has been suspended four games for spiking his helmet at home plate umpire Bill Miller.

The incident happened Tuesday night after Miller made back-to-back questionable strike calls in the ninth inning of a one-run game. Lawrie is appealing and is in Toronto’s starting lineup Wednesday night against the Yankees. He’s unlikely to have the punishment reduced given how bad the scene looked. Lawrie was also fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball.

Yunel Escobar (Blue Jays)

Yunel Escobar is not in Wednesday’s starting lineup.

It’s a scheduled day of rest for Escobar. Omar Vizquel will start at shortstop against the Yankees.

Brett Lawrie (Blue Jays)

5/16/12 2:36 pm

Brett Lawrie is in the starting lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Yankees.

Lawrie lost his composure following a called third strike call Tuesday by flinging his helmet, which inadvertently hit home plate umpire Bill Miller. He’ll remain in the lineup for now, but a suspension is almost certainly coming soon.

Blue Jays sent RHP Trystan Magnuson outright to High-A Dunedin.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster. Magnuson, who was reacquired from the A’s last November, has a 4.05 ERA and 5/1 K/BB ratio in 6 2/3 innings at the High-A level this season. The 26-year-old right-hander posted a 6.14 ERA in nine relief appearances with Oakland last year.

Brett Lawrie (Blue Jays)

5/15/12 8:50 pm

Brett Lawrie was ejected from Tuesday’s game after taking a called strike three and throwing his helmet, which bounced and struck home plate umpire Bill Miller.

Lawrie is likely looking at a suspension. Miller made two bad strike calls in the at-bat, but Lawrie can’t lose his temper like that. While he surely didn’t intend to hit the home plate umpire, we still anticipate the act costing him a few games.

Edwin Encarnacion continued his hot-hitting ways against the Rays on Tuesday night, connecting on his 12th home run of the season in a losing effort.

Encarnacion hit his two-run blast off David Price in the third inning, which put the Jays ahead 3-0 at the time. But Toronto wasn’t able to muster any more offense for the remainder of the evening. Encarnacion is now hitting .270 with 12 homers and 31 RBI. He’s also scored 22 times and has stolen six bases.

Henderson Alvarez turned in another solid performance on Tuesday, limiting the Rays to four runs (two earned) on 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings of work.

Alvarez fanned one and didn?t walk a batter. His defense did him no favors, making four errors that contributed to a pair of unearned runs and drove up his pitch count unnecessarily. The loss evens his record at 3-3, though he still owns a sparkling 2.62 ERA. Alvarez will attempt to get back in the win column when he squares off against the Mets at home on Sunday.

Vladimir Guerrero reported to the Blue Jays’ minor league complex in Dunedin, Florida on Tuesday morning.

He still needs to take a physical before getting on the field for the first time. There are no guarantees that Vlad will eventually be added to the Blue Jays’ roster, and if he is, it won’t happen until sometime in June, at least. “I think there are frequent conversations on how we can improve the team,” manager John Farrell said. “One would have his name in it, one would have other names in it. I wouldn’t pinpoint it to the time when Vlad is major league ready. The one thing that I will say to that is that there are ongoing conversations that we look for ways to best improve where we are today.”
