Yan Gomes (Blue Jays)

5/21/12 5:33 pm

Blue Jays manager John Farrell said Monday that the club seeks to give Yan Gomes “relatively consistent at-bats” due to his versatility.

Many speculated that Gomes could be sent back down to the minors with Brett Lawrie returning from his suspension, but the Jays think he could get enough at-bats between third base, first base, catcher and DH to justify keeping him at the big league level. It would likely take an injury for him to get significant playing time, though, so he’s only an option in AL-only leagues.

Sergio Santos (Blue Jays)

5/21/12 5:12 pm

Sergio Santos (shoulder) is currently throwing at a distance of 115-120 feet.

Santos hopes to be long-tossing by the end of the week, after which he’ll likely begin throwing from a mound. It was previously estimated that he could be back by the end of the month, but now early-to-mid June looks more realistic. Casey Janssen will continue to handle save chances.

Jesse Litsch (Blue Jays)

5/21/12 9:59 am

Jesse Litsch told Sportsnet’s Barry Davis that his shoulder infection has become “career threatening.”

The infection developed around Litsch’s surgical wound in March and has only gotten worse despite efforts (including a second procedure) to correct it. He’s on the 60-day disabled list and remains out indefinitely. The 27-year-old has a 4.16 ERA in 88 career appearances.

Henderson Alvarez got lit up in Sunday’s loss to the Mets, allowing six runs on nine hits in only five innings.

Alvarez struck out three and walked two in his shortest start of the season. He’s now allowed 19 hits over his past 11 2/3 innings of work, and seen his ERA and WHIP rise to 3.30 and 1.23, respectively. His curious 18/15 K/BB ratio suggests further regression is in store. He’ll get the Rangers in Texas next weekend. Keep him benched for that one.

Jose Bautista (Blue Jays)

5/20/12 3:46 pm

Jose Bautista stayed hot in Sunday’s loss to the Mets, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.

Bautista’s solo blast off of Dillon Gee in the third inning was his 11th of the season, and sixth in 10 games. Finally well above the Mendoza Line at .217/.333/.454, expect a prolonged wave of destruction from Toronto’s all-world right fielder.

Ben Francisco (Blue Jays)

5/20/12 2:40 pm

Ben Francisco left Sunday’s game with a tight left hamstring.

The Blue Jays are calling it precautionary, though it’s worth noting that Francisco had problems with the same hamstring at the end of spring training. Consider him day-to-day.

Travis Snider (Blue Jays)

5/20/12 10:56 am

Travis Snider took himself out of a game for Triple-A Las Vegas this past Wednesday after aggravating his right wrist injury.

Snider is still feeling symptoms when swinging a bat. He’s batting a cool .333/.411/.604 with five dingers for Vegas this season but obviously won’t be a candidate for recall until he’s healthy.

Adam Lind (Blue Jays)

5/19/12 8:23 pm

The Marlins will likely discuss Adam Lind, according to Juan C. Rodriguez of the Sun Sentinel.

“But don’t look for an aggressive pursuit,” Rodriguez adds. He’s speculating here and not reporting, but if a team were to look into taking Lind off Toronto’s hands, Miami would be about as good a fit as any. The Fish shipped the disappointing Gaby Sanchez to Triple-A Saturday and now have a massive hole at first, assuming Logan Morrison isn’t shifted to the position immediately. Lind is hitting .186/.273/.314 through 132 plate appearances this season and finished with a brutal .251/.295/.439 slash line in 2011. He was sent to the minors Thursday and placed on waivers the next day. He’s owed over $10 million through the 2013 season.

Adam Lind (Blue Jays)

5/19/12 5:49 pm

According to Danny Knobler of CBS Sports, the Blue Jays placed Adam Lind on outright waivers Friday.

“No chance he gets claimed,” said an American League executive. Lind was batting just .186/.273/.314 through 132 plate appearances this season and finished with a brutal .251/.295/.439 slash line in 2011. Toronto signed Lind to a four-year, $18 million contract extension prior to the 2010 season. The club is on the hook for a $2 million buyout of a club option after the 2013 season.

Brandon Morrow (Blue Jays)

5/19/12 2:30 pm

Brandon Morrow tossed a complete-game shutout in a 2-0 win over the Mets on Saturday.

Morrow limited the Mets to just three hits while striking out eight and walking one. It was his second shutout of the season and the third of his career. The Mets threatened in the ninth and Morrow benefited from a missed call by second base umpire Brian Knight on what would have been a one-out double by Mike Baxter, but it was a dominant outing regardless. He’ll carry a sparkling 1.90 ERA into a start against the Rangers next Friday.
