Scott Kazmir (Angels)

2/22/12 1:51 pm

Andy McCullough of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that the Mets are expected to have a scout watch Scott Kazmir throw on Friday.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reported Wednesday morning that the Mets were one of six teams Kazmir was considering and that the left-hander could make a decision within the next few days. It’s unlikely the 28-year-old has much left in the tank, but he could be worth a shot on a minor league deal.

Bobby Abreu (Angels)

2/22/12 1:24 pm

Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said Wednesday that he hopes to put Bobby Abreu in a position to be successful.

Abreu told Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportesLosAngeles.com that he wants to be traded if he won’t be an everyday player, but Scioscia still sees a role for him on the team. “How much playing time he gets, we don?t have a crystal ball. We certainly have more depth now than we?ve had in a long time,” explained Scioscia. “But I don?t think Bobby would be valuable playing once or twice a week. He would have to play more than that. But there’s certainly ways to get a lot of guys in the lineup to where they?re contributing.” Abreu is making $9 million this season and most teams have already filled their DH spot, so the 37-year-old may have no choice but to accept a diminished role.

Scott Kazmir (Angels)

2/22/12 10:44 am

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Mets are among six teams in the mix to sign Scott Kazmir and that the left-hander could make a decision sometime in the next few days.

We heard late last week that the Mets didn’t have interest in Kazmir “at this time,” but that’s apparently not the case. The 28-year-old southpaw averaged 86-89 mph and topped out at 91 mph while throwing for approximately 10 teams Friday in Houston. The former Mets’ farmhand has a 5.54 ERA over 55 starts dating back to the 2009 season, so he’ll almost certainly have to settle for a minor-league deal.

Bobby Abreu (Angels)

2/21/12 8:11 pm

Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto told Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com that Bobby Abreu hasn’t issued an ultimatum to him or manager Mike Scioscia.

“I spoke to Bobby a little more than a week ago, I’d say — a week, 10 days ago — and walked through his current situation, and Mike has had very similar conversations,” said Dipoto. “So, Bobby is aware of the circumstances, he’s aware of the people on the roster. We do see a fit for Bobby on this club, he’s aware of where that fit is. It’s not something that we’re going to play it [out] in the media. … Whether it’s an ultimatum that’s been issued, he has no right to do that.” Abreu is owed $9 million this season, so the Angels would likely have to cover a significant portion of his remaining salary in a trade. As a result, Gonzalez hears they are content to keep him for now.

Bobby Abreu (Angels)

2/21/12 5:12 pm

Bobby Abreu told Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportesLosAngeles.com that he would rather be traded than accept a bench role.

“I’m an everyday player, I can still be in the lineup of a major league team,” said Abreu. “I will not be on the bench knowing I can play.” Abreu’s role will largely depend on the health of Kendrys Morales (ankle) and Mark Trumbo (foot), but with a crowded outfield, he looks like the odd man out right now. The Angels nearly found a match with the Yankees, but A.J. Burnett nixed the deal by using his no-trade clause. Abreu, who turns 38 next month, is owed $9 million this season.

Kendrys Morales (Angels)

Kendrys Morales (ankle) ran six low-intensity, straight-line sprints Monday in Angels camp.

It’s yet another significant step in Morales’ ongoing recovery from a fractured ankle. He’s unlikely to be ready for the Angels’ first Cactus League game, but the 28-year-old slugger could very well be on track for Opening Day.

Jerome Williams (Angels)

2/19/12 6:42 pm

Angels manager Mike Scioscia called the fifth spot in the Angels’ rotation an “open competition.”

Jerome Williams, who is out of options, is the favorite to pitch behind Jered Weaver, Dan Haren, C.J. Wilson and Ervin Santana. But he has plenty of competition for the job. Prospect Garrett Richards posted a 5.79 ERA in 14 innings with the Angels last year, but he has a big arm and was 12-2 with a 3.15 ERA in Double-A. Trevor Bell, who made 19 appearances out of the ‘pen in 2011 and lefty Brad Mills, who came over from Toronto in the Jeff Mathis trade, are also contenders, as are Eric Hurley and Matt Shoemaker, who signed minor league contracts this winter. The 30-year-old Williams came out of nowhere last season to post a 3.68 ERA and 28/15 K/BB ratio over 44 innings. He’ll make $820,000 this year.

Mark Trumbo (Angels)

2/19/12 2:05 pm

Mark Trumbo (foot) has been hitting and fielding grounders at third base and making throws across the diamond.

Trumbo will be re-examined on February 28 and hopes to be cleared at that time to run at full speed and field slow rollers. It’s so far, so good in his recovery from a stress fracture in his foot, but he’s got a ways to go still. The Angels are fully expecting him to be good to go by the beginning of the season.

Kendrys Morales (Angels)

2/19/12 2:01 pm

Kendrys Morales said his ankle feels “a lot stronger,” and he’ll take part in fielding drills on Monday.

He’ll also begin a running program on the outfield grass. Unlike last spring, he’s had no swelling in the ankle and feels much more confident he’ll be OK this time around. It’s good news, but Morales is far from out of the woods. If he does manage to break camp healthy, Morales figures to see ample playing time in the DH slot and would qualify as a nice buy-low candidate for fantasy purposes.

Bobby Abreu (Angels)

2/19/12 8:48 am

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that Bobby Abreu “has been offered around” in trade talks.

The Angels have insisted publicly that they have no plans to trade the veteran, but they have a logjam in the outfield and at DH and surely wouldn’t mind getting Abreu’s $9 million salary off the books. They reportedly would have been willing to offer him to the Yankees in an A.J. Burnett deal, but Burnett could veto any trade to a West Coast team. Abreu batted just .253/.353/.365 with eight homers and 60 RBI in 2011.
