According to Andrew Baggarly, the Giants have become much more receptive to the idea of re-signing Melky Cabrera this offseason.
They were apparently pleased by his willingness to eventually own up to and take responsibility for his actions, including removing his name from possible contention for the NL batting title. By reinstating him to the roster on Friday, rather than releasing him, they retain their window of exclusivity to negotiate a contract before he becomes a free agent after the World Series.
