Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said he was “very encouraged” about what he heard regarding Daisuke Matsuzaka’s (neck) last rehab start Wednesday.
Matsuzaka threw four scoreless innings for Triple-A Pawtucket before getting knocked around in the fifth. “I didn?t see it, but Arnie [Beyeler, Pawtucket manager] and Rich [Sauveur, pitching coach] said it was his best stuff that he’s had in a while,” Valentine said. Matsuzaka will make another rehab start early next week. His 30-day rehab window ends on August 29, at which point he seems likely be activated to serve in a long relief role.
