ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that Justin Upton’s no-trade list blocks deals to a handful of large-market clubs, including the Yankees.
It was previously believed that Upton could block deals to the Indians, Tigers, Royals and Athletics, but the list has changed. Players often include large-market teams for potential leverage, so this doesn’t mean that those teams can be ruled out as a possibilities. It’s just an added hurdle on a potential deal. Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers isn’t afraid to listen to offers, but it would take a major haul of prospects to pry Upton away from Arizona. The 24-year-old outfielder is under contract through 2015 at a reasonable rate and it’s possible that we haven’t seen him at his best yet.
