Miguel Batista will take the place of Dillon Gee (shoulder) in the starting rotation starting next Wednesday against the Nationals.
The Mets could have arranged their rotation so that they didn’t need a fifth starter until July 21, but they have decided against going that route. It’s not clear whether this is just a spot start for Batista, as we should know more about Gee’s status in the days ahead, but he’s not a promising option if the Mets hope to hang around in the playoff race. Jeremy Hefner is a logical alternative for the rotation while prospect right-hander Matt Harvey is knocking on the door for a promotion to the big leagues.
