Melky Cabrera made a triumphant return to Kansas City Tuesday, singling and belting a two-run homer to win All-Star MVP honors in the National League’s 8-0 win over the American League.
It was all NL from the beginning, as they touched up Justin Verlander for five runs in the first inning and then got to Matt Harrison for three runs in the fourth. Cabrera’s teammate, Pablo Sandoval, was the other candidate for MVP, as he ripped a bases-clearing triple off Verlander in the first. The NL completed the first All-Star game shutout since 1996, and the eight-run win marks the largest margin of victory in NL history.
