Jason Vargas struck out 10 while spinning 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball in a 3-2 victory over the A’s in Seattle on Tuesday night.
Vargas gave up only three hits and two talks while matching a career-high for punch-outs. The only damage he sustained was a two-run bomb by Yoenis Cespedes in the seventh. Coming into the game, Vargas had allowed 16 homers in 60 innings on the road, compared to just four in 42 1/3 innings at home. It’s hard to get excited about Vargas’ evening when it came in an ideal matchup coming off four June starts in which he’d allowed 23 runs, bumping his ERA from 3.45 to 4.66.
