Jeff Samardzija plans to alter his offseason workout routine to reflect his new role as a starter.

The last two years, Samardzija has subjected himself to a rigorous routine in Arizona that began in November. But, with his innings total in 2012 likely to approach or exceed 200 innings, he’ll push it back until later in the offseason. “Obviously I felt I was in a good position to throw a lot this past offseason,” Samardzija said. “I thought my arm was in good shape from the previous year. But this year with throwing the innings we?re going to throw I?ll probably push it back a little bit.” Samardzija will carry a 4.04 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 78 strikeouts in 78 innings into Friday’s start in Arizona.
