The Blue Jays selected high-school LHP Matt Smoral with the No. 50 pick in the 2012 draft.
Smoral, a towering 6’8”, 220-pounder, is committed to North Carolina. A stress fracture in his right foot that ended his season in April may have caused his free-fall down draft boards and also might convince him to head to Chapel Hill to rebuild his draft value. Prior to the injury — and even after it — Smoral was considered in some circles one of the 10 best prospects in the draft. Smoral has considerable upside, nice polish for a pitcher his age and several pitches at the embryonic level that can be improved, but Toronto will have to polish his tools to unearth the No. 2 starter they hope they’ve stolen.
