Mariners manager Eric Wedge has announced Chone Figgins will no longer be an everyday player, and that Dustin Ackley will take over as Seattle’s leadoff hitter.
It’s a move that’s been three years in the making. Figgins has hit an absurdly poor .231/.304/.287 while stealing just 55 bases in 267 games since signing a four-year, $36 million deal in December 2009. Kyle Seager and Alex Liddi should split time at third going forward. The struggling Ackley’s fantasy value gets a nice boost from the lineup bump. Figgins may never get another chance to be an everyday starter in the league.
