A.J. Burnett was shelled for 12 earned runs in 2 2/3 innings Wednesday in a loss to the Cardinals.
Burnett is just the fifth pitcher in the live-ball era to allow more than 12 earned runs in a start lasting less than three innings. He looked awful from the outset and the Cardinals were able to pounce. The veteran right-hander will look to atone for the hideousness next week against the Nationals, but his tenure with the Yankees would suggest that the inconsistency is going to be a common theme all summer.
