TWTW* (7/24/10 – 7/30/10) *Abridged

In this week’s edition on TWTW, I take a more abridged approach to summarizing the weekly events.  I’ll likely fluctuate between this abridged version and an extended version depending on how juicy the week has been…

Saturday (7/24) – Kyle Davies avoided becoming Alex Rodriguez 600th homerun victim (he was already A-Rod’s 500th homerun victim) in the Kansas City Royals’ 7-4 win over the New York Yankees.  Ubaldo Jiminez had his second shortest outing of his career, lasting just 2+ innings and allowing 6 runs and 6 walks in the Philadelphia Phillies’ 10-2 shalacking of the Colorado Rockies.  Magglio Ordonez fractured his ankle in a slide into home plate and is going to be out 6-8 weeks.  This, plus the Detroit Tigers lost 3-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays at home.  Mat Latos notched a victory in his first start back from the disabled list as the San Diego Padres defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 9-2.

Sunday (7/25) – The Alex Rodriguez watch continues as he went homerless again in the New York Yankees’ 12-6 win over the Kansas City Royals.  Tommy Hunter still has not lost a game this season as the Texas Rangers defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 6-4.  Buster Posey had 4 hits to extend his hitting streak to 18 straight games in the San Francisco Giants’ 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.  During the game, the D-Backs traded Dan Haren to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for Joe Saunders and three other players.  Brad Lidge needed 30 pitches to escape the 9th inning as the Philadelphia Phillies’ nipped the Colorado Rockies, 4-3 to inch closer to the division leading Atlanta Braves.

Monday (7/26) – Matt Garza pitched the first no-hitter in Tampa Bay Rays history (they were owed one after being no-hit so many times) beating Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers, 5-0.  John Danks dominated again as the Chicago White Sox bested the Seattle Mariners, 6-1.  Zach Greinke got lit up for 8 runs in 4 innings as the Minnesota Twins embarassed the Kansas City Royals, 19-1.  Joe Mauer had 5 hits and 7 rbis in the affair.  Dan Haren made his Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim debut against the Boston Red Sox and was given a scare as Kevin Youkilis lined a ball off of his elbow in the 5th inning.  Haren left the game after striking out 8 and took the loss in the Red Sox’ 6-3 victory but Haren says he should be fine for his next start.  And Alex Rodriguez went homerless again.  However, Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson did homer in the New York Yankees’ 3-2 win over the Cleveland Indians.

Tuesday (7/27) – Jose Bautista hit 2 homeruns for his league leading 29th and 30th homeruns on the year in the Toronto Blue Jays’ 8-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles.  To the Washington Nationals’ fans chagrin, Stephen Strasburg was scratched from his start with shoulder tightness.  Miguel Bautista got the start instead and shut out the Atlanta Braves, 3-0.  The New York Mets’ offense woke up against a surprise opponent – Adam Wainwright, as they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-2.  Nelson Cruz hit a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 10th to give the Texas Rangers a 3-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics.  Cliff Lee took a no-decision.  Gavin Floyd dominated the Seattle Mariners in the Chicago White Sox’ 11-0 victory.  Dan Uggla is scorching with 2 more homeruns but it wasn’t enough in the Florida Marlins’ 6-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants.  Oh, and no homeruns for Alex Rodriguez

Wednesday (7/28) – Roy Halladay was spectacular in the Philadelphia Phillies’ 7-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Tim Hudson was also strong in the Atlanta Braves’ 3-1 win over the Washington Nationals.  The New York Mets battled back from a 6 run deficit by Johan Santana but lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in extra innings on Albert Pujols go-ahead rbi single, 8-7.  Josh Beckett notched his first victory since April 10th in the Boston Red Sox’ 7-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  And oh yeah, still no 600 for Alex Rodriguez who now owns the longest streak between 599 and 600 of anyone in the 600 hr club.

Thursday (7/29) – Roy, oh Roy!  The Philadelphia Phillies acquired Roy Oswalt from the Houston Astros for J.A. Happ and three minor leaguers.  Oswalt now joins Roy Halladay as a very formidable 1-2 punch.  David Price became the AL’s first 14-game winner as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the reeling Detroit Tigers, 4-2.  R.A. Dickey shut out the St. Louis Cardinals for 8 1/3 innings as the New York Mets defeated the Cards, 4-0.  The Washington Nationals traded closer Matt Capps to the Minnesota Twins for two minor leaguers – one being high level prospect catcher Wilson Ramos.  The Nationals also placed Stephen Strasburg on the 15-day DL.  And in game action, the Nats defeated the Atlanta Braves, 5-3.  Ubaldo Jimenez notched his 16th victory of the year in a nice bounce back victory as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 9-3.  Anibal Sanchez tossed a complete game 1-hitter against the San Francisco Giants as the Florida Marlins rolled to a 5-0 victory.  Also on trade front, Jorge Cantu was traded from the Fish to the Texas Rangers.  And once again, that guy A-Rod?  Yeah, still no 600…

Friday (7/30) – Lots of trade action as the deadline approaches.  Daniel Hudson of the Chicago White Sox was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Edwin Jackson.  The D-Backs also defeated the New York Mets 9-6 after another shaky performance by Mike Pelfrey despite a 2-hr effort by David Wright.  The White Sox, meanwhile, defeated the Oakland Athletics, 6-1 in Brett Anderson‘s return from the DL.  The New York Yankees acquired Austin Kearns from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later.  The Yanks also dropped the first of a crucial series with division rival the Tampa Bay Rays, 3-2.  Broken record – still no 600 for A-Rod.  The Yanks did manage to pull off a trade for slugger Lance Berkman as well – giving up only two lower end minor leaguers while having the Houston Astros throw in some cash.  Meanwhile, newly acquired J.A. Happ in the Roy Oswalt trade tossed 6 scoreless innings for the ‘Stros in their 5-0 defeat of the Milwaukee Brewers.  And speaking of Oswalt, he was roughed up in his first outing for the Philadelphia Phillies, tagged for 5 runs over 6 innings in the Phils loss to the Washington Nationals, 8-1.  Nationals now ex-closer Matt Capps notched his first save with his new team as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Seattle Mariners, 5-3.
