Courtesy of Brian Costa at the Newark Star Ledger, Mets GM Omar Minaya has issued an announcement. The Mets first base job is up for grabs this spring. Daniel Murphy won’t be given the keys as the starter. This is music to the ears of Mike Jacobs. The Mets signed Jacobs last week to a minor league contract.
VJ Says: You’ve got to believe this is Murphy’s job to lose. Yes, the Mets lineup could use some more power. Are the 20 or so long balls that Jacobs can provide really worth his poor OBP and one-hundred plus strikeouts? Murphy’s offensive makeup isn’t that of a typical first baseman. But his ability to get on base, hit for average and provide a little pop, are likely the best option the Mets have at the position. Then again, if Jacobs looks anything like the player that hit 32 homers in ’08, the Mets will have a lot to consider.
Regardless of which man wins the job, prospect Ike Davis is being counted on to inherit first base in 2011, if not sooner. Wouldn’t it make sense for the Mets to preserve Murphy’s trade value by giving him a healthy amount of at-bats in 2010?
